Question about 1997 GMC Sonoma
Transmission wont downshift when pedal depressed . will manually shift 2,3 ,4th no 1st or O.D. Problem had occured before but reset itself.
Sounds like it was going out before but fixed it self so you might need to go to the shop and have the trans flushed

1st thing to do is test the system for codes, the problem is most likely a failed or stuck shift solenoid indside the trans, have you ever serviced the trans, sometimes a fluid and filter cahnge will cure these kinds of issues.

SOURCE: transmision shifting problem
Reverse is not sycronized, this means the gears have to stop to mess and not grind, two thing cause this, being to quick to slam into reverse after clutch is depressed, a problem with the clutch.

my friend you are having valve body problems, the 1-2 shift acumulator valve is probably stuck, you have to service the valve body or replace it
