Question about 1987 Jeep Wrangler

1987 Jeeps starts right up but stalls after 2 seconds

My jeep ran great until I had gas tank replaced. Now it starts right up but stalls after 2 seconds. I took it to local garage that changed tank. Replaced fuel pump and injector. After $600 bill, mechanic said he can't figure it out. However, we found out that the jeep will run if you disconnect the alternator and just run on battery power. Any ideas what could be causing this problem. Bad news is my jeep is 500 miles away at hunting camp and mechanics are hard to find.

How would the alternator effect the ignition switch? When I turn the key it starts right up, but stalls rights away, if I keep the key turned on using starter, it stays firing, but as soon as I stop turning it over, it dies after 2 seconds. Mechanic found out it ran with alternator disconnected just by chance. I long as I have charge in my battery I'm fine, but if it recieves charge from alternator it dies.

I have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler that has issues which I thought were battery related and began after it was towed. I accused the tow truck company of stealing my battery and replacing it with a junk battery. However, I did replace the battery with a new battery and I am still having the same issue. It just won't start as if the battery is dead. I have taken to my mechanic who tells me the brain is gone. Do you think that could be the issue? He also tells me that he cannot find a brain for it and now what do I do?

the engine is fuel injected, it is called TBI (throttle body injection) and the whole system is made by GM, that includes the engine, so yes it has a computer, u may have a defective fuel injector or a defective computer, hard to say without tests, is there anyway to get your hands on an electronic tester for the fuel injection system?

this sounds like an ignition switch issue.

Check the alternator and see what charging voltage is... anything over 14.3 volts running should be suspect. If voltage is too high, it is possible that the computer is shutting down the engine to protect itself. I don't see any connection between the fuel tank problem though, unless while doing pump, someone accidentally grounded a hot lead and didn't think any damage had been done. This makes some sense, because the battery alone will lonly put out from 12-13volts, which go lower without alternator, till it reaches a point where voltage is insufficient to operate the ignition system. This is a "shot in the dark" and will likely lower my "rating" but I don't care about that... Try checking this... at least it points you in some direction rather than flailing around!!!
good luck

How do I reset the automatic fuel shut off valve on a 2007 Jeep Patriot

There is no automatic fuel shut off valve on Jeep's ! A electronic control module Controls the fuel pump . (TIPM ) totally intergrated power module ! Go to http://bbbind.com/free_tsb.html free wiring diagrams ! Your best bet would be to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop .

Engine cranks good but will not start.

did you check all fuses with a meter ?
you are new to jeep repairs.... here are some facts.
jeeps have ASD relay.
when car dont start, see what the ASD relay is doing
do not throw parts, you picked the most hard and expensive thing to change on a lark. why do that?
the fuel pressure gauge is $20 and takes 5min to see that fuel pressure is good. not pulling the tank and pump. for fun.
why do that.? (seen 100000 times on forums, this....)
here is mr. ASD, and what to check.
the ASD can cut fuel and spark for many causes. x8

http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/ASD.html

automatic shut down relay.

does the relay close cranking? y/n ?
if yes, does it then drop out cranking, y/n?

those are the first 2 tests on all jeeps 1993 to now.

each check discovers what is wrong
so does attaching any OBD2 scan tool and cranking
for 5 long seconds and behold, DTC errors.
got DTC errors cranking/??

BINGO x10.

Cannot get 1987 chevy van 20 to keep running... stalls out

Best do a fuel pressure test. Should have chg. fuel filter from the get go. The only other filter is on the end of the fuel pump in tank. Bad gas and dirty gas will plug up fuel filter, hense burn pump up.

1987 IROC, Ran out of gas,put gas in, now service engine light on

if you have high milieage you may have sucked in the gunk on the botton of your tank when you ran out of fuel check if you can hear the fuel pump running for about 2 sec with key on engine off if you hear nothing the problem is with your pump as they will burn out if they run dry for too long,if you hear the pump check for fuel pressure if pressure low check fuel filter to see if clogged by gunk from bottom of tank.
