SOURCE: 1991 prelude drivetrain problem

Wow, that's weird! If the speedometer is moving, but you aren't, then yes, something in the axle is not connected to the wheel. Were there any weird noises or symptoms before this happened? Either the cv joint is completely shot (u should have heard noise when turning a long time before this) or the spline could be stripped, but that is something I haven't heard of. If the clutch was shot, the engine would rev, but speedo is connected to transmission, so the speedo would not work if the clutch didn't. Let me know if anything was going on before this happened, I have a 91 Prelude (2nd since 1994, love it). countrycurt0

Can't Shift To Neutral with a Dead Battery

I am not sure about the Impala but the SAAB (also made by GM) has a small slot near the shifter where you can insert your key or screw driver (something flat) to release it from park when the car cannot be powered up.

How can I move shift lever to neutral on my 2010 Equinox when battery is dead ?

There is a small access hole (sometimes has a small cover on it) on or near the shifter housing. Insert a small punch into the hole and depress the shift lock release. Move the shifter into nuetral while holding release down.

Hello My battery died and I cannot shift to neutral to get the car out the garage to charge it. How do you manually shift to neutral. It will not move to shift into neutral. I guess it is electronic as...

If you have a shifter on the floor look for a small cover. It will allow you access to a shift release manual button. If not check the manual it will show you.

What is the switch called right beside the gear shift that you can put something in and make it shift and does that reset the car?

i beleive you are talking about an emergency release for the gear shift . this is designed so that in the event of a dead battery or another problem you can put the key in the slot and move the gear shift into neutral. it should not reset anything on the car but realize that if your battery is dead then when you charge it or replace it the cars systems may reset themselves due to loss of power.

How to move to neutral when the battery is dead

Nearly all modern cars with a column, console or floor-mounted shift knob are equiped with a shifter level lock release button. Look for a small hole or plastic plug, usually to the right side of the shift lever or on rare occassions above or below the shift knob. It should be just large enough to stick the ignition key into the hole and push on the release button. While holding the release button with one hand, have foot on the brake or parking brake set and gently bress the shift knob button and move to neutral. I spent two years working for ADT Automotive at Mid-America Auto Auction and out of over a quarter million automatic transmision cars I have seen, nearly all have this feature.
