Question about 2004 Kia Rio

1 Answer

With no warning the car just stopped running. It was running fine then I hit the dip between the pavement and dirt drive and it just shut completely off.

I have had to replace the mass air flow sensor twice already. It will not start. It sounds pretty bad when I tried to re-start it. Is there supposed to be a belt at the fan near the radiator? Yes dumb female here ha ha!!! Could it be the fuel pump shut off because I hit the dip too hard? There is not a belt at the fan by the way but it looks like there should be since it looks like there is a pulley there. All the fluids are fine. I am hoping it isn't the timing belt since everyone says that probably means I no longer have a car.

It turns out it was the timing belt. I don't know just how ruined the engine is yet but I found a trustworthy guy to check it out. My advice to kia owners change the timing belt early especially if you have manual transmission otherwise the engine is most likely ruined. I made it to 65,000 miles. I didn't realize I should have had it changed at 60,0000. Thank you for your advice

Yes there is a serpentine belt that runs the alternator and accessories. That must be on the engine.
Unless you damaged the crankshaft or the oil pan I doubt hitting a bump or dip would do anything to the timing belt. It is behind the cover behind the pulleys. But anything is possible.
You could have knocked a wiring harness connector or other component loose.

SOURCE: 02 sedona hard time starting and mass airflow sensor issues

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

Hard starting could be caused by a number of faults such as weak battery corroded/loose battery terminals, fuel delivery issues and others which may include as you posted the MAF sensor. In my country however, most Kias have a peculiarity. They like to be well warmed up (even if it is hot here). Hard starting specially after short hops/trips is actually the ECU/ECM/Control Module or the car's computer getting mixed sensory inputs. The corrective action is to warm up the car fully before using. In some instances, it may also be required to reset the computer by removing the negative battery terminal for a few minutes. Pls bear in mind that some alarms are triggered this way and/or some car stereos would require a security code if the battery is removed.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: mass air flow sensor is

My check engine light came on and the code came back saying that the mass air flow sensor was out. All I did was change the air filter even though I really didn't think it needed it, the light went off and has not come back on yet. Knock on wood!

SOURCE: 2004 Kia Optima no start after timing belt, crank, cam sensor replacement

did you use aftermarket crank sensor? if so that might be your problem. dealer has several different ones, by providing vin number, but there is only one after market for all optimas 01-05. try to connect thick pink wire and thick orange wire together on the ignition failure sensor. you might have the same problem as me. good luck.

SOURCE: 2002 Kia Sportage will not start.

p0560 is system voltage problem. open or short between the battery positive and the ecm.CHECK ALL FUSES. dosnt matter what they are labeled under dash and under hood replace any that are bad and retry to start. no start then check voltage to ecm grounds to. i dont have a wireing diagram to give you but for a small fee or free the dealer can make you a copy.make sure all the wires that go to battery terminals are not corroded and are making good contact [verified with volt meter]. if after all checks ok then replace ecm. as a side note i havent had to change one ever.

start reading on page 333
the pages are for both transaxle systems.

select track is ok, on pavement but never in LOW.

this is not AWD, so what are the tires touching? do tell.
by what indication.?
  1. just the silly light.
  2. the lever is stuck
  3. or all 4 tires spin on ice.? in 2H?

are you on ice. or dirt. if not better read the operators guide,
as that is wrong. if driving on dry pavement. move to dirt or gravel area and shift back to 2H
cured now. next time dont drive on non iced roads in 4wd or 4Lo
or it will bind up. need a suzuki TSB warning you?
have it.

solution, i think is stop doing that.
the TSB solves the after you messed up .

1998 vitara 4wd lever jamed

jammed to what (2H, 4H, 4L or neutral)??? just a hint?
driving on what.?
this is not a AWD car, that began in 2004 , sorry.
you are driving the wrong car.
are you on snow, ice or dirt?
if not you will do this, READ the operators guide first

read the warnings on wind UP. suzuki has a funny TSB on that.
35 years of part time 4wd,
the lever will jam if you run 4wd on dry pavement,
for sure.
this car has no center differential nor a viscous coupling to get
you out of windup.
this is 1998 hardware.
so drive to dirt, and shift out of 4wd, to 2h and read the operators guide or this. (first parts)

4x4 dont work ,on my 2007 compass

well first RTM read the operators guide, lost that? get one
what are you driving on, what are the tires touching,
we have no clue.... ice, snow, dirt, pavement, what?
"new Liberty limited with the full 4wd package (Selec-Trac). There is a full time 4wd and part time 4wd"
so first post which SYSTEM you have, we dont know.

best answer on the real forum is.

part time is for ice and dirt
full time is like the name stated, on anything.

easy huh>
if you drive PT 4wd on pavement it will wind up the drive line
and do damage, and either fail to engage or lock up in 4wd and refuse to disengage until you hit ice or dirt.
before using 4wd why not read the guide.
read, then act.

2007 jeep liberty stuck in 4wl, handle moves down but still in 4wl drive

how'd it get there?
driving on hard pavement will in fact get it stuck,
are you on ice or dirt. ?
if on pavement, it will stick on all part time 4wd cars.
its not AWD, so can not be driven on hard pavement.
only ice,snow, dirt.
if on hard pavement move to the dirt side of road and it will now release. this is called windup, and will damage the drive line.
if you keep doing this.
