Is this problem only on decel does it have a stable idle An egr that is not closing on decel could account for missing even stalling but the backfire indicates excessive fuel in the exhaust stream and egr gas is inert and is only used to dilute the fuel mixture to reduce combustion chamber temperature and control the formation of NOX gases

don't worry about it, MOVE ON, replace the EGR VALVE, have you replaced both the air & fuel filters ? do it. make sure plug wires donot touch each other !!! do you have an ignition module in your distributor, if so replace it, be sure to apply silicone grease underneath where the module mounts, on distributor base, not the module. helps prevent overheating of module . replace your OXYGEN sensor, do it ! see how all this works, good luck !

97 gmc 5.7 marks on inside of distributor to set timing

Marks on or in a distributor can only get it close. Use a timing light to get it exact.

My '97 Jimmy misses when I accelerate and lunges when stopped. My fuel injection was cleaned and fuel filter was changed last week and my service engine light is still on.

My 96 started out that way, then got worse and worse. Got all kinds of trouble codes, like multiple misfires, maf sensor bad, map sensor, O2senssor rich. Turned out to be the distributor cap and rotor. Rotor had carbon track on the backside. Other than that, they looked perfect. New ones solved the problem and all the trouble codes went away. All that misfiring was causing all the sensors to throw false codes. I figured out I needed to look for something not so obvious when the $100 maf didn;t change a thing.

Nissan truck idles fine, does not acelerate well, and misses

Try to disconnect MAF sensor(mass air flow sensor) or MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure) , I don't know which one you have , (suppose to have either one) , when engine running and see if it becomes any better , if it did , then it's your problem.
Just remember one thing , if your check engine light is off now , it will be on after you disconnect any above mentioned components.
Easy to reset , disconnect battery for 30 sec.
