Question about 2003 Ford F350 Super Duty DRW SuperCab

1 Answer

2000 F350 Super Duty Will not go into 4 wheel drive

My truck has the electric swith to put the truck into 4 wheel drive. When I turn the switch to engage the 4 wheel drive nothing happens, no lights come on for the 4 wheel drive and the transfer case will not engage.
The truck has manual hubs and the switch has 2 wheel drive 4 high and 4 low. It will not go into 4 high or 4 low.

I am not sure where to start looking, I have been told the moter used to activate the 4X4 is a vacume motor as well as I have been told the motor is electric

Can anyone give me help on getting my 4 wheel drive to working.
Thank You

I have an 02 F-250 4x4, my problem is close to the same but my 4x4 lights come on and you can hear it clank, like it is engaged, but the front wheels don't pull. I've checked the vaccum motor and its running also. To make it worse I don't have manual locking hubs either. Can anyone help?????

I have recently had this problem with a customer. It seems the 4x4 low will only engage in neutral with the brake applied. And also check fuse. Then select drive and you will feel it lock in. Don't "goose" the fuel when attempting this.

SOURCE: four wheel drive doesn't seem

there are vaccum seals inside the spindle, they may be bad- or it could be the vaccum control solenoid.

SOURCE: 2002 ford f150 4x4 manual transfer case vacum

The vacuum shift solenoids have power to one side of them at all times.
The GEM applies ground to them, to activate them, after the shift on the fly position confirm from the trans case.
The power to both should be on the White w/ Light Blue stripe wire.
Ground to them ( from the GEM ) is
2WD : Gray w/ Black stripe wire
4WD : Red.

The only TSB I know of is for the 04-06 MY trucks, for the IWE solenoids ( the kind without the water shield ).

Did you jack up the front end ( and support correctly ) turn the key to the run position ( do not start ), and shift into 4WD, and check the front drive shaft ?
If the shaft still turns, the problem is in the transfer case, if not you are looking in the correct place.
The GEM will not signal a vacuum solenoid until the transfer case has shifted into 4L or 4H ( 4 switches that are the return signal to the GEM ). Could be a problem with the connector on the transfer case ( think it is a 8 or 10 pin connector ) to the contact plate position switches in the trans case.

There is a manual front ale cable, but I would think you would want to confirm why the GEM is not signalling the shift solenoids, prior to replacing them

Abs light comes on in my 2003 f350 xlt super duty. it comes on when accelerating or siting still or just driving. my husband is a mechanic and has tried everything he knows to fix it . Looking for more...

maybe a wheel speed sensor is not working or is off a little that could throw a code. or the reluctor wheel on the brake rotor got damaged somehow. Or maybe in the rear the abs sensor is no good assuming it has 4 wheel abs. What does the trouble code say?

Key won't turn. Ignition frozen

Sounds to me you dropped a tumbler in the switch, it happened to me on a 2000 Ford focus. It could also be the wheels are turned and they are putting pressure on the switch try trurning the wheel while turning the switch.

The front drivers side hub is making noise when i hit bumps, when i lock the hubs in it stops making the noise. what's wrong? 2000 F350 Diesel

sounds like you have a bearing going out in the hub. The reason it stops making noise with 4 wheel engaged is having the truck in 4 wheel drives puts power to the front hub. Which gives it more stability. In other words you have power which helps bind and hold the bearings from more extensive travel then with it disengaged. The other possibility is you have a ball joint going out. If you are capable of inspection on these to possibilities you will need to jack it up and inspect ball joints for movement and look for abnormal up and down movement of the hub. If not take your truck in and get the front end inspected at a brake or an alignment shop.

2000 f350 super duty 7.3 drw steering seems to lock up on hard right and left turns. wheel shakes untill i stop and restart. i can sometimes stop the shaking if i quickly turn right and left while driving....

The control valves from the power steering unit lock in position at extreme angles. Either the fluid is dirty - replace it - or the unit is worn out - valves can be replaced separately and the unit refurbished. Or just buy a new unit.

Seat warmers not working 2005 ford f350

well first of all does the button for the heated seats light up? if so then it is not a fuse problem. usually the heater pad itself. disconnect the connector and check with a ohm meter. if the meter reads open the element is shot. as for the 4 wheel drive will have a wheel hop when turning corners this is normal due to front and rear wheel trying to push in different derections. if it happens all the time the gears in the diff might be different from front to back. check to see if a diff overhaul was done if so.
