SOURCE: Rough idle, Car shakes, sputters and misfires upon acceleration

It sounds like you may have a problem feeding the fuel to your engine, I had the same problem with my 89 RS. All the 1989 model's fuel systems were recalled. I think you may need a new fuel pump. The fuel pump is located inside the gas tank in the rear of the car right under the rear axle. The fuel pump itself isn't too expensive, but with other small parts such as the electrical harness upgrade and fuel filter and the labor you should be looking somewhere in the $500 range. I hope this helps.

SOURCE: car is shaking, idles funny, feel like its running on 4cyl not 8

Hello lovnmymustang,

Thank you for choosing fixya.com. So, you're getting bad gas mileage, and getting a deep sound when you push the gas. Try these suggestions first:

1. Replace O2 sensors; have code cleared at auto parts store if it has come on (service engine light will come on)
2. Replace the fuel filter and the air filter
3. Change the spark plugs/wires/coil pack(s)(carborator if equipped and not coil pack(s) )
a. If coil pack is replaced, check the modular as well (sits under coil pack)
b. If carborated, replace cap and rotor
4. c. Regardless of a or b - change spark plugs and wires

In the main title above (my current page) it says 'car is shaking' - if this feels like it's in the steering, have a front end alignment checked (and performed) if needed. If it feels like the engine, do the above suggestions.

I hope this information aides in the successful repair of your Mustang. Please, let me know if there is anything more I can be of assistance to. Thank you again for choosing fixya.com

SOURCE: car feels like tranny slips or car misses during acceleration

Try for the clutch--try accelerating on a hill from a slow crawl or stanstill ( safely ) if the engine revs the clutch is slipping----

Why does my car misfire randomly at idle and sometimes at operating speed/rpm?

A faulty air intake sensor can fool the management system into rich or lean fuel mix, causing rough running. Check exhaust emissions for rich fuel smell. That should at least rule another line out if nothing else...
