The are ride height adjusters the look like arms. they are mounted on the bottom of the struts and lower control arms that control the height The can be adjust but for the most part if the were working fine before then they need to be replaced. Make sure that there are no leaks in the system.

The air pump is located in front of the radiator reservoir on the passenger's side - with the power steering reservoir between the two.

The air ride is turned on in the truck. The panel in located on the opposite side from the gas tank input (inside the trunk) behind a door. It should be marked on the door.

Make sure the air ride is enabled. turn the ignition key on, You don't need to start the vehicle. After about 5 seconds the air compressor should engage. You don't always hear it when it's running well. Since the engine is off, you should be able to hear any leaks in the air system.

Possible causes:
Hole/crack is air spring
Hole or broken air line or coupling
Failed air compressor

The rear suspension should use the same air system. If the pump is 'out' then the rear will also fail to adjust, But since it is on a separate air-line and valve system, it will continue to operate when the front has air leaks. And vise versa.

One pump
Two suspension systems - Front/Rear
Four air springs - One for each wheel

Another possible problem:
Your front wheels have a censor to indicate the height of the vehicle from the ground (basically). If this come unclipped, your system will think It's too high and will not add air to bring it to normal height. This usually happens on ONE side causing the vehicle to 'lean' or seem to. One side will have the wheel up in the wheel well, and the other will be a bit more gap between the wheel and the wheel well, but may seem to be 'low' too. On the side which is lowest, turn the wheel that direction and look on the front of the suspension arm for the sensor. it should be attached top and bottom.

If the clips have failed, there are no replacements available from the dealer, and replacement of the sensor is required.

It sounds to me like you have a hole or cracks in your airbag. The dealership typically diagnoses it as the compressor but that is only to keep you coming back and wasting more money on something that will never truly be fixed. The airbag is the problem now but the compressor has to work extra hard because it is like blowing up a balloon with a hole in it. Therefor the airbag will kill the compressor. I would recommend going to strutmasters.com and taking a look at our conversion kits. these convert you from the airbag to a powder coated American made steel coil spring that is guaranteed to last the life of the car. You leave the switch on, jack up the rear body, not and let it hang. then let it down slowly to the lever you expect it to end up. Do not let it all the way down, because you risk damage to the air struts.

However, the continental has a history of serious control problems with the four corners. It is a nightmare to repair. It is such a huge problem there is a system built to replace the auto ride with a spring and strut system like the ford taurus.

When I got my 1994 Continental, it had already been converted back to a coil-spring suspension, and the air-ride system was GONE. You will find that is the case with most of the ones that are still on the road. The air-ride system turned out to be an unreliable, trouble-prone, nightmare for most owners....and it was cheaper to scrap it and go back to after-market coils, than what it was to have a Lincoln dealer fix it. Looks like you're destined to join the club....If you decide you want to have it fixed, and make the car driveable, be prepared to PAY for it.

Does a 2002 lincoln continental have front air ride I am replacing the rear with a coil conversion and want to know if this will hinder the front


the front does have air ride, and I do not believe that converting the rear should hinder the ride of your car. I would recommend replacing the front with a coil over system also. you can get the conversion through strutmasters.com or like wise.

Air ride suspension leaking in rear of car is their a better solution than air ride...my car is a 1994 continental has 104k runs great thats the only thing wrong is the air ride suspension...


It is possible to go with conventional springs/shocks instead of the air ride system. This has become a common "fix" for faulty air bags due to the expense. The ride will still be great, you will only lose the load leveling ability that the air bags provided.

1998 Lincoln Continental air ride problems I was told by a mechanic that by air ride computer was bad. I took it in and the mechanic put a diagnostic machine on the car and he overrode the air ride...


Yes its the air bag module that's bad because he over rode the system the bags are not getting any air from the pump and are slowly deflating.

I just got a 96 Lincoln Continental... the REAR air seems to be fully inflated... jacked up rear end, and very ruff ride. I read that you have to shut the switch off in the trunk, and then manually bleed...


you have to remove the slenoid valve or just the line( to remove push in the orange ring aorund the air line,to hook back just press it in) after the reset the ride control switch and let the car run on a level surface,this will reset the ride control height.

I would like to bypass the air compressor and manual inflate the air ride so that it stays up.how do i do that Dennis


you would have to unplug compressor and remove airline and tie in a valve like one off of airshocks.
it is usually the air springs that rot and start leaking. so you will probably still leak down. you can replace with coil springs and do away with air ride your continental has airride front and rear?
