only one tensioner,what i do when i touch one is to draw the way its fitted then i cant forget it ,and yes evan us so called professionals do it .Evan forget to tighten wheel nuts when phone has rung,best advice i can give is see if a neighbour has one and look at theirs,or what i have done before now as iam too vain to ask and that was to drop something in the shopping mall and have a crafty look .

I have a 2004 and all the service manuals. I have never worked on this type engine,although I have been at it for 45 years,some professional,when I owned a shop. That said, I will try to answer a specific question, if I can find it for you. Short of you buying all the manuals I have or mailing you mine.

I'am looking at the Workshop Manual-it has three locations on the 3.9L, two on disassembly and one on installation. Nice pictures,and necessary stuff,but near useless. Several hundred dollars for these. Got to have them,but not helping you or anyone else.

It looks like you need to have a tool to lock the flywheel in place. eg. one of the holes the CKP Sensors scans. It's called an ignition pulse wheel. One hole is special. Turn crank 45 degrees ATDC,the crank keyway will be at 6 o'clock,install tool
Also,a tool to hold the flats on the cams, to the top
If you don't have the cam sprockets and chain on.from your head service shop,more tools.
Then you have several locking pins,like dowel pins to hold everything,while you struggle with the chain tensioners,again ,more pins

Noise in the timing chain


May be its problem with timing chain and it has to be inspected and replaced.Or its possible that timing chain is got misaligned.

My 2004 Lincoln LS rattles each morning when I start it. It usually does not rattle during the day, but it does every once in awhile. Is this a timing chain or tensioner problem? If so, is this...


The V8 LS does have a history of timing chain tensioners bleeding down and causing a rattle as you describe. Make sure the oil filter you are using has a anti drain back valve. New tensioners are very labor intensive to install. Lincoln has no recalls for this problem hopefully you have some extended warranty to help with the cost of this repair.

I have a 2004 4wd Lincoln Navigator. I just replaced the drivers side strut/bag assembly. I have a ticking noise that I can't detect where its coming from. I think it might be the timing chain?? ...


It has a double timing chain, labor is about 27 hrs. + parts. For the dealer this sounds about right..

You may find a good reputable auto repair shop to do the job for half the price? (If this is the problem)? I think dealers charge 60-80 dollars an hour compere to a small shop 30 dollars an hour, Not as much over head !! Hope this was some help to you?

My timing chain broke


Chains seldom break,so maybe the plastic chain guides
wore or broke,or the tensioners got hung up

Whatever the issue, you will have to remove all accy's
from front of engine and remove the timming cover

That is a job for a repair shop and only one with
experience on your vehicle. You don't need a dealer,
but it will take a little over a day to repair and won't be cheap

Head gasket got bent and I have replaced it . Now the problem I'm facing is how to set the crank shaft and the comshaft timing. I need the procedure for engine timing


Timing Chain & Gears Removal & Installation To Remove:
NOTE: Keep the cam chain away from magnetic fields.
Crankshaft set at TDC marks hnda_trk_crv_crank_tdc_marks.gif

  1. Turn the crankshaft pulley so its Top Dead Center (TDC) mark (1) lines up with the pointer (2).
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front tires/wheels. Front undercar splash shield hnda_trk_crv_frt_under_splsh_shld.gif

  4. Remove the front undercar splash shield.
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6. Remove the cylinder head cover (See section on Valve Cover).
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley (See section on Crankshaft Damper). CKP sensor and VTC solenoid electrical connectors hnda_trk_crv_ckp_vtc_ele_conn.gif

  8. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector (1) and Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) oil control solenoid valve connector (2).
  9. Remove the VTC oil control solenoid valve (See section on VTC Solenoid Valve).
  10. Support the engine with a jack and wood block under the oil pan. Ground cable and upper bracket removal hnda_trk_crv_grnd_cbl_uppr_brckt_rem.gif

  11. Remove the ground cable (1), and remove the upper bracket (2). Side engine mount bracket removal hnda_trk_crv_side_eng_mount_brckt_rem.gif

  12. Remove the side engine mount bracket. Timing chain cover removal hnda_trk_crv_timng_chain_cov_rem.gif

  13. Remove the timing chain cover bolts both from the front to the block and from the bottom to the oil pan.
  14. Remove the timing chain cover.
  15. Loosely install the crankshaft pulley. Compress the timing chain auto-tensioner hnda_trk_crv_compr_tim_chain_auto_tensnr.gif

  16. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to compress the auto-tensioner. Lock the timing chain auto-tensioner hnda_trk_crv_lock_tim_chain_auto_tensnr.gif

  17. Align the holes on the lock (1) and the auto tensioner (2), and then insert a 0.06 inch (1.5 mm) diameter pin (3) into the holes.
  18. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to secure the pin. Removal of the timing chain auto-tensioner hnda_trk_crv_rem_tim_chain_auto_tensnr.gif

  19. Remove the auto-tensioner. Removal of the timing chain guide B hnda_trk_crv_rem_tim_chain_guide.gif

  20. Remove the cam chain guide B. Removal of the timing chain guide A hnda_trk_crv_rem_tim_chain_guidea.gif

  21. Remove the cam chain guide A (1) and tensioner arm (2).
  22. Remove the cam chain.

What is the right way to time a 4cyl Chevy S-10 timing chain


1998-2003 To Remove:
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Crankshaft pulley and hub
    • Drive belt tensioner gm_truck_s10_tcbolts.gif

    • Timing chain cover bolts gm_truck_s10_tc.gif

    • Timing chain cover and gasket
  2. Install a bolt in the end of the crankshaft CAUTION
    Do not install the crankshaft balancer bolt or a bolt longer than 1 inch or damage to the crankshaft threaded hole will result.
  3. Rotate crankshaft until the number 1 piston is at Top Dead Center of compression stroke.
  4. Make sure that the alignment marks are aligned with the tabs on the timing chain tensioner. gm-03-22-611.gif

  5. Measure distance between hole in bracket and unworn surface of timing chain tensioner shoe. NOTE: If distance between the hole and unworn surface of timing chain tensioner is greater than 0.314 in (8 mm), replace tensioner, timing chain and sprockets.
  6. Remove timing chain tensioner bolts.
  7. Remove the timing chain, timing chain tensioner and camshaft sprocket at the same time.
  8. Remove the crankshaft sprocket using special tool J 22888-20A or equivalent.
  9. Remove crankshaft sprocket alignment key.

NOTE: If any camshaft components are being replaced to correct a noise problem, all camshaft drive components must be replaced.
To Install:
  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket alignment key.
  2. Install the crankshaft sprocket using special tool J 5590 or equivalent. gm-03-22-613.gif

  3. Compress the timing chain tensioner spring and insert a pin into the tensioner hole to retain the tensioner shoe.
  4. Install timing chain and timing chain tensioner (do not tighten tension bolts).
  5. Align the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks with the tab on the timing chain tensioner.
  6. Tighten the timing chain tensioner bolts.
    • Torque to: 18 ft lbs (24 Nm)
  7. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt.
    • Torque to: 96 ft lbs (130 Nm)
  8. Remove pin from timing chain tensioner hole.
  9. Remove bolt from end of crankshaft. CAUTION
    Inspect the timing chain cover for warping or damage. Replace if needed.
  10. Clean all timing chain cover mating surfaces.
  11. Install or connect the following:
    • Timing chain cover to the engine block
      1. Ensure that the gasket is installed properly in the groove in the timing chain cover
    • Timing chain cover and make sure it fully seated on the alignment dowel pins
    • Timing chain cover bolts
      1. Torque to: 97 inch lbs (11 Nm)
    • Drive belt tensioner
    • Crankshaft damper hub and the crankshaft pulley

2.4L engine dont have timing belt.it has a timing chain.fixing timing chain dont cost much.but the damage that occur when it broke.you probably got bent valves.damage piston heads.you can buy car if they dont charge arm and leg.you can repair timing chain your self for at least .$300.00.you have to buy timing chain.it come in a set.you get timing gears and tensioners.about.$190.00 and .$40.00 for timing cover gasket and seal.dealership going to charge you at least.$600.00 including labor.

My 2002 lincoln nav. 5.4 . the dealer said the #3


There is no recall on the cylinder heads of a Navigator,if it was then the repair would be free,so he must be refering to a technical service bulletin.
The problem with having head redone is if they resurface the head then the bolt holes in the front timing chain cover will not line up with the bolt holes in the head when you reinstall the cover. Ford has recently come out with oversized headgaskets for this purpose so it is do-able now but it would have to be done by a machine shop fimilar with this proceedure.We tried to have this done one time by a local machine shop here and it was a total disaster.Wound up replacing heads anyway. The problem with this type of repair though is that the dealer wouldn't be able to warranty the repair but if it saves you a couple thousand that probably wouldn't matter to you. But you would definately need to be aware of this.

My timing chain slipped on a 2004 Honda Accord.


your vehicle would actually have a timing belt on it not a chain. Honda recommends replacement at around 90k-105k (miles) along with water-pump ,tensioner and tensioner bearing, depending on climate and normal/severe driving conditions. they have had some issues with some of the hydraulic tensioners, 6 cylinder model, failing prematurely. Depending on the dealership ,and if you can show a record of adddiquate maintenance records (you have kept up on normal maintenance) and failure is not due to anything other than part failure, honda will most likely agree to a warranty of the part itself with you paying for labor cost due to fact of outside normal warranty specs.
