2002 Ford Escape Brake stutter

Hi - My Escape started to stutter when I was braking from 20+mph to a stop as if the ABS was engaged. The brake fluid had been leaking so I had the master cylinder replaced. Now there are no leaks but I still have the stutter stop problem. I also hear a clicking sound when I brake. It didn't happen for 1 day after the master cylinder was replaced. The mechanic has checked the brakes twice and they look fine. He said that no codes are showing for the ABS module. I don't know what to do at this point. Any ideas? Thanks

The mechanic said he checked the brakes completely - pads, rotors too I'm pretty sure. One thing he noticed was that the tires were all a little low and one tire was a few pounds lower than the others so he brought them up to the right level. He thought that the tire inflation imbalance might be triggering the ABS to kick in. After he fixed that, the problem went away for a day but it returned.

Thanks for responding. I had the ABS sensor replaced last Fall. The problem turned out to be cracked tone rings that were triggering the ABS.

When braking on dry pavement my abs clicks in and creates shudder. Also, this is likely the cause of brake fluid leaking out the top of the fluid container. I'll try to get Ford to repair it under recall.

I have an 03 Escape.  Since fall 08 I have heard, felt this stutter, but didn't know what to call it.  At first it was ocassional, but has grown increasingly frequent--three to four times in a row accompanied once in a while with a ticking sound, and pulling the car to the left.  Mechanics couldn't replicate the problem.  Today they are replacing the tone rings.   Having a term to use, I got on line and found out it is a frequent problem for owners.

Have you had anyone try to clean and adjust the rear brakes? You will need a shop to scan the van for ABS codes first to cure the ABS light.

SOURCE: spongy brakes

Does sound like you need a new master cylinder. On a 2000 you wont need to back bleed. You will just need to follow the instruction and bleed the master and all four points. you will probably need to bleed the ABS block and proportioning valve but only if they have bleeders on them.

SOURCE: 1999 Ford Taurus, replaced leaking master

There is a special tool required to bleed the brakes, it plugs into the ABS hydraulic control under the hood and holds the ABS valves open to remove the trapped air during bleeding, u will need to have the dealer bleed the brakes, they are most likely the only ones that will have this special too, but u can try an outside shop, I am sure Snap on tools makes this tool in the aftermarket tool catagory..

On 2005 ford escape a light on for check brake lamps

Hello, You will need to inspect your brakes to cure this problem. Be aware that the rear brakes have 2 systems in them, a service brake and an Emergency brake.

What happens usually is that debris from a failed brake pad has fallen into the Revolution counter on one of the wheels. This confuses the ABS unit and activates a Warning light. Another possibilty is that you have a Brake fluid leak and need to fix the leak and replace the fluid.

A shop with the proper scanner can hook up to your vehicles' ABS system and it will reveal which wheel is causing the alert. The remaining way without a Scanner is to pull off the wheels and manually look at the Brake hardware behind each wheel.

The warning lights are usually accurate and this is not a repair to delay.

My friends 02 ford escape abs light came on before a trip. I found that the passenger side rear wheel cylinder was leaking badly. I replaced both wheel cylinders and also installed new brake shoes, I then...

the 02 ford escape I believe has a switch that detects the position of the brake pedal and sends the signal for the mastercylinder to apply pressure to the brake if the switch is out or has a poor ground that could cause the issue. I can double check later when I am home and have more time to look through the service bulletins

recall...........................................
  • SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC Recall for 2002 DODGE CARAVAN
    • Recall Announced MARCH 13 2006
    • NHTSA Reference #06E022000
    • Number Affected 7,440
Summary: Certain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain Ford, DaimlerChrysler, and Jeep passenger vehicles. These brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of Napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, Carquest, bendix, and wagner. Only products that were manufactured from July 27, 2005 through January 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. When subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence: Loss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Fix: Affinia (brake parts, Inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. The recall began on March 20, 2006. Owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.

Did you bench bleed the replacement master cylinder? If you did and there is NO air in the braking system then look for improperly adjusted rear brakes[if drum],or a siezed caliper slide[s] if disc brake equipped.

ABS LIGHT COMES ON AND DISENGAGES THE ABS BUT

When the ABS light is on the ABS system is deactivated. Meaning, when the abs is light is on and you brake, the tires will lock up with heavy braking.

Escapes have a common issue of the ABS excitor rings cracking causing ABS problems. Sometimes it activates on almost every brake application. It may set a code in the ABS computer for an intermitten wheel speed sensor or no wheel speed signal. Check all the "rings" on the outside of all four axleshafts. If none of the rings are cracked it is likely a bad ABS wheel speed sensor.

Check to see if you have had your car serviced for the ABS recall. You will want to do this timely as it is a fire hazard.
