Stiff gear shift Vovo v40 automatic (English right hand drive)

When in P it has become stiff to shift down to D. I have to apply pressure to push the lever a little to the left and then it moves down to drive.
The change between R N D 3 2 L is as normal as is the shift back to P
The Volvo is from 1999 and a 1.8 , 87000 miles and otherwise great.
To further complicate things we now live in France and our nearest Volvo dealer is 80 miles away.

Any Ideas

Clean shifter and knob with windex/glass cleaner.  Then spray shift button seam/crack with clear silicone lubricant (not messy or staining) work button a few dozen times.  Problem solved. My 2000 v 40 did this and I was happily amazed at how easy it was to fix.
Has not been a problem for over 2 years now.  I imagine a sticky beverage got dripped in the wrong place and simply gummed things up.

2 things that could cause that: shift cable frayed and obstruction of shift cable. Was the car shipped to France before this started? When did this start? Have someone shift it with the engine off and look underneath where the transmission is, (or under the engine if front wheel drive), for branches or sticks stuck around your transmission cable. Hope that helps.

Most difficult shifting manual transmissions are caused by a clutch that either doesn't fully disengage, is warped or a pilot bushing is damaged.

Underneath the stick, there might be a problem like a stuckup or broken plastic shifting bearing. Check this one.

My shift knob won't move

WITH INFO YOU ARE PROVIDING CLUTCH MIGHT NOT BE COMPLETELY DISENGUAGING CAUSING A STIFF OR DIFFICULT SHIFT. CHECK BY PUTTING VEHICLE ON FLAT GROUND ENGINE OFF. GET INTO 1ST GEAR. THEN PUSH IN CLUTCH AND START CAR WITH BRAKE OFF IF CAR STARTS ROLLING THEN CLUTCVH IS STILL TRYING TO GRAB. THEN ADJUST THE CLUTCH PER VEHICLE SPECS.

When I put my gear into Reverse, Netrual and Drive the gear is getting stiff to move. Why is this happening?

If you mean the shifter is getting hard to move, its probably the shift linkage sticking, try a couple squirts of pblaster or other penetrating oil. If the motion of the vehicle is getting hard to drive in reverse and drive the torque converter may be the issue.

Has Coke or anything that goes sticky been spit around gear shift? I have had this before & had to pull console apart & clean with spray & wipe.

Gear lever stiff and does not return to the centre

Hi, Permanant fix, take to garage and get them to replace link shaft on gear change mechanism. Or temp fix, get a tin of WD 40 with the plastic pipe that can be pushed onto the spray nozzle. Get a chopstick or simillar. Put chopstick down side of gear rubber gater. Do this by pulling blue rubber gater away from gear knob and gently inserting chopstick down into gater. Put the WD 40 plastic pipe down gater alongside the chopstick and spray a good amount. then roll the chopstick around to another possition and spray more WD 40. repeat until you have done it four or five possitions covering all round. Job done.

I have a 1989 jeep wrangler. yesterday, after the stick shift felt stiff to shift, the clutch felt suddenly loose. Today, the stick shift stopped moving completely while i was driving. Finally, I was able...

Sounds like you are having a clutch problem. The sudden looseness in the clutch pedal indicates a problem with either the hydralic system, (slave or master or line) leaking or clutch pressure plate going out. Check your clutch fluid resevoir first, if low look for a leak under the vehicle, have a friend push the clutch and get underneath to find leak.
