You can take it off the engine and have it bench tested at an auto parts store. You can also check output with a meter.
You can NOT check it by disconnecting the battery cable and waiting to see if the engine continues to run. You can cook the alternator and the computer if the battery is disconnected when the engine is running.
Keep in mind an alternator that is not charging could be caused by a wiring problem not a faulty alternator.
