Symptoms could be electrical failures, like both headlights dying at the same time. This means the alternator is overcharged.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do you know if alternator is bad on a 2006 hyndai sonata v6

Using a volt meter check the voltage at the battery with the vehicle running. There should be more than 13.5 volts. If it is more like 12 volts or less that the alternator is not working or there is an open between the alt and the battery. The most common cause of the battery light is a bad alternator.

look at the ground and pos. line at battery, look at stater wire off alternator , it tells the alternator pos+ or Neg- ground. corrosion of wire ends can cause this.

It might have a bad cylinder but I can't imagine that would adversely affect gear changes though it might be responsible for the lights.

In the same way I have difficulty accepting a bad alternator would have that effect, though the effect of a bad alternator, a low battery could have some strange effects...

I speculate the buddy with the similar truck isn't telling the whole story and maybe doesn't even know the whole story...

It also seems strange that a mechanic finding a bad cylinder didn't discover and report what actually was bad about it.

Battery loses charge while not running

Could be an old battery or your alternator is bad. If the battery is bad you will be able to jump start it and the alternator will keep it running by supplying enough juice to keep it running. If it starts to lose power while its running them your alternator is bad. You could check the battery at your local auto store and they can tell you if your battery is bad. Most places do this for free.

2004 envoy alternator gauge pegging

alternator could be overcharging, cause of this is a bad voltage regulator, it should be internally in the alternator, (a way to tell this is to check your battery to see if it looks like its swelled, or pull alternator off and have it tested). if voltage regulator is bad it's more cost effective to just replace the alternator. but if not then good possibility your gauge has gone out.

Battery light comes on and off, battery not staying charged

It sounds like your Alternator is going bad which is why your battery light is coming on and telling you the Alternator is not fully charging the battery. If you have a Voltmeter you can test your Alternator, it should be putting out between 13-14 volts when the engine is running, any less and your Alternator is bad.

How to tell if the battery or the altenator is bad

Test the car battery & the alternator supply voltage. If the alternator voltage is around 14 Volts, engine idling and headlamps low beam turned ON, then the battery is bad. After engine stopping, the battery voltage should be at least 12,4 Volts. The battery could be too old and needs to be replaced. If the alternator voltage is below 13,8 Volts then you must check up first time the alternator belt & tensioner pulley. If everything is OK, then the alternator is out of order and needs to be repaired in a dedicated workshop: weared brushes, bad voltage regulator, ...

How can i tell if my starter is going bad? I had

It may not be the starter. The battery could have a weak or dead cell in it and not holding a charge.
The alternator could be bad and charging the battery.
If you have a volt meter, or can get one, with the car running, put the leads from the meter to the battery terminals, red positive, black ground.
Put the meter switch to 12 volts. If the meter reads 14 to 15 volts, the alternator is ok, below that it isn't charging. If it does read 14 to 15 volts, replace the battery.
By the way, the starter is ok, or it wouldn't have started with a jump.
It's more a battery/alternator issue. Clean the battery terminals first and see if that makes a difference.
