Question about 1997 Mercury Mystique

1 Answer

I have a 1997 mercury mystique. Battery fully charged, turn the key, absolutely nothing. In fact no power to anything, no interior lights, nothing. Battery is brand new

This has been somewhat of an ongoing problem. I took it in thining it was an issue with the battery or potentially the alternator, or a sort somewhere that was continually draining the battery. The shop wanted to replace battery and alternator. I wanted to do a little at a time. Tey tested both battery and alternator and virtually said they COULD be the problem. Didn't test bad, just not good. I replaced battery and overnight first day fine. Wife went to start car next day, started fine, no hesitation. She turned on headlights and the car died. Ever since then, absolutely nothing. Fully charged battery. Seems like power to nothing,, interior lights, everything. Acts like battery not connected. Is there a main fuse,, or could this be a voltage regulator,, or what?

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

SOURCE: Battery is drained by an internal short even with

Yes, it is very possible that a small internal short in the starter or alternator can cause this. Sometimes the starter wires can lightly touch and cause it to lose a charge. There are a number of things that can short and cause a battery to die over an extended period time. You should probably consult a specialist because it can be difficult to track down.

Has to be a cable connection issue of some sort. Check the other end of the battery cables, either the ground connection to the chassis, or power connection to the under hood fuse box. Could be that one of the battery cables has broken inside the insulation yet the connector looks good. Try using a cheap ohm-meter to see if there is a break in either cable ...keep looking!

How do I install the starter on a 1997 Murcury Mystique. I didn't take it foo but it needs to be installed.

Well Jerome,

That's a good name for a car in such a dilemma...
Mystique... 1997 (posted both 4 & 6 cylinder parts).

Since the lifting is the hard part... it would be better to take it to your cooperative PARTS HOUSE FOR TESTING..

ELSE
you might GET to do everything at least twice (bad idea).

If you have the bolts.. the job gets a lot simpler.
Generally you have a Huge (POS +) wire that connects
from the battery DIRECTLY to the SOLENOID.

First thing:
You want to do is DISCONNECT the GROUND
at the BATTERY (NEGATIVE (-)) terminal.
(Always first off & last on... always... safety first).

Connect the "S" lead to the "S" terminal
(battery KEY switched ON only in START Position) ...

If you don't own (or want to buy) a manual
go to BBB Industries and register to use their
wiring DIAGRAMS & TSBs
(See very bottom: Technical Service Bulletins).

Why won't my car start? no lights interior/exterior.

It seems that the battery is incapable of holding a charge. You might try disconnecting the battery cables and try charging the battery again over night. Reconnect and see if anything works - if nothing works - it's time for a new battery.

My 1998 ford escort stop running no lights

start with the battery. needs at least 11 or 12 volts to start the car. By no lights, do you mean nothing, absolutely nothing comes on? no lights on dash when you turn key to on? If so, need to check battery connections. are they both tight and clean? Is battery fully charged? Before you can diagnose the car you musthave a good battery that is fully charged. Then you can try and start it. If it still wont start or crank over you may have a main fuse out that would be under hood near battery.

Was the old alternator tested to see if it was bad? If it was and all wires are in good shape and reconnected the new alternator the new one may be bad also. It can happen.

1997 Mercury mystique the engine cooling fan will not operate

it could be the engine coolant sensors on the thermostat housing it controls the fans when they work if your sensor is out you can unplug the sensor while running the motor and if they turn on after a moment(the fans)then the sensor is bad if not make sure your fans work by jumping power to them 12volt

Try disconnecting your park lights after you have a charged battery to see if that is the reason your battery is going dead. If it's still charged then most likely, there's your problem. I would try this before tackling the switch.
