My 2006 Hyunda Santa Fe tachometer quit working and the check engine light stays on now. it gives me a p320 Ign/Distributor Engine Speed input circuit code.What needs to be replaced?

If you live in the US, take it to qany Auto Zone store and thy will read the codes off for you, I would suspect any right thinking competitor would do the same, check if you don't have one near by.

P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction

The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) measures crankshaft location and relays this information to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). Depending on the vehicle, the PCM uses this crankshaft position information to time the spark properly or on some systems it is only for misfire detection and does not control spark timing. The CKP sensor is stationary and works in harmony with a reluctor ring (or toothed ring) that is attached to the crankshaft. As this reluctor ring passes in front of the CKP sensor, the magnetic field created by the CKP sensor is interrupted and this creates a square wave voltage signal that the PCM interprets as crankshaft position. If the PCM detects that there are no crankshaft pulses or if it sees a problem with the pulses on the output circuit, P0335 will set.

NOTE: If the crank sensor is used only for misfire detection and NOT spark timing (this varies with the vehicle), the vehicle should start and run with MIL (Malfunction indicator lamp) illumination. Also, some vehicles require several key cycles to illuminate the MIL. If this is the case, there may be no MIL illumination until the problem often enough over time. If the crank sensor is used for BOTH misfire detection and spark timing, the vehicle may or may not start.

Symptoms may include:
* Vehicle may not start (see above)
* Vehicle may run rough or misfire
* MIL illumination

Causes: A P0335 "check engine light" code could be caused by:
* Damaged CKP sensor connector
* Damaged reluctor ring (missing teeth or not turning due to sheared-off keyway)
* Sensor output open
* Sensor output shorted to ground
* Sensor output shorted to voltage
* Failed crank sensor
* Broken timing belt
* Failed PCM

Possible Solutions:
1. Using a scan tool, check if, when engine is running or cranking, that there is an RPM signal.
2. If there is no RPM reading, then visually inspect the crank sensor and connector for any damage and repair as necessary. If there is no visible damage, and you have access to a scope, you could check the CKP 5 Volt square wave pattern. If you do not, then, obtain a resistance reading of your crank sensor from a repair manual. (There are so many different types of crank sensors that there's no way to put here which resistance reading is correct). Then check the resistance of the CKP sensor by disconnecting the sensor and measuring resistance of the sensor. (It is best to check resistance readings from the PCM connector. This rules out any wiring problems from the start. But it does require some mechanical skill and shouldn't be performed if you\'re not familiar with automobile electrical systems). Is the sensor within resistance specs?
3. If not, replace the CKP sensor. If so, recheck resistance reading from the PCM connector. Is the reading still okay?
4. If not, repair open or short in the wiring to the crank sensor and re-check. If the reading is okay, the problem is intermittent or the PCM may be at fault. Try reconnecting and checking for RPM signal again. If there is now an RPM signal, wiggle test the wiring harness to try and induce the fault.

This code is basically identical to P0385. This code P0335 refers to Crankshaft Posistion Sensor "A", whereas P0385 refers to Crankshaft Position Sensor "B". Other crank sensor codes include P0016, P0017, P0018, P0019, P0335, P0336, P0337, P0338, P0339, P0385, P0386, P0387, P0388, and P0389.

This engine is very sensitive to overheating and will easily warp the cylinder head. On the other hand, all the performance symptoms as well as the misfire code can be caused by a faulty crank sensor.

This leaves you at a crossroads as to how to diagnose. You could replace the crank sensor and see what happens. Or you could do a compression test to get an idea of the general health of the engine.

As for the lack of heat, you may have an air pocket in the cooling system or it may not be completely repaired. If, for example, the thermostat were stuck shut causing the pressure to build and crack your radiator, you'd still have the problem that you have no coolant flow, resulting in no heat.

Unfortunately, considering the overheating, my inclination is that you're more likely to need a cylinder head than any of the minor repairs I've suggested. But the only way to find out is to check the cooling system, compression, and crank sensor.

Ignition failure sensor is used to check whether the spark ignition is occurred correctly or not and also used to tachometer drive. The sensor monitors the voltage difference between a resistance which is on the battery circuit for ignition coil. When the ignition coil works properly, the electric current through the resistance is detected as voltage drop. This is confirmed for every ignition event with the crankshaft sensor and the camshaft sensor. If ECM detects a malfunction, no ignition is possible, so the engine would not start. If there is no ignition signal for a predetermined cycle for one or two ignition coils, an ignition coil circuit failure exists.

This service procedure is for setting base ignition timing. Refer to underhood emission sticker for any additional service procedure steps and/or specifications.
These engines require a tachometer hook-up to the check connector-see illustrations. NEVER allow the tachometer terminal to become grounded; severe and expensive damage can occur to the coil and/or igniter.
Some tachometers are not compatible with this ignition system, confirm the compatibility of your unit before using.
  1. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature. Turn off all electrical accessories. Do not attempt to check timing specification or idle speed on a cold engine.

  1. Connect a tachometer (connect the tachometer (+) terminal to the terminal IG- of the check connector) and check the engine idle speed to be sure it is within the specification given in the Tune-Up Specifications chart or underhood emission sticker.
  2. Remove the cap on the diagnostic check connector. Using a small jumper wire or Special Service Tool SST 09843-18020, short terminals TE1 (test terminal No. 1) and E1 (earth-ground) together.
  3. If the timing marks are difficult to see, shut the engine OFF and use a dab of paint or chalk to make them more visible.
  4. Connect a timing light according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  1. Start the engine and use the timing light to observe the timing marks. With the jumper wire in the check connector the timing should be to specifications (refer to underhood emission sticker as necessary) with the engine fully warmed up (at correct idle speed) and the transmission in correct position. If the timing is not correct, loosen the bolts at the distributor just enough so that the distributor can be turned. Turn the distributor to advance or ****** the timing as required. Once the proper marks are seen to align with the timing light, timing is correct.

  1. Without changing the position of the distributor, tighten the distributor bolts and double check the timing with the light (check idle speed as necessary).
  2. Disconnect the jumper wire or Special Service Tool (SST) at the diagnostic check connector.

This jumper will be used repeatedly during diagnostics in later sections. Take the time to make a proper jumper with correct terminals or probes. It's a valuable special tool for very low cost.
  1. Refer to the underhood emission sticker for timing specification and any additional service procedure steps. If necessary, repeat the timing adjustment procedure.
  2. Shut the engine OFF and disconnect all test equipment. Roadtest the vehicle for proper operation.

My 2009 Hyundai Sonata quit accelerating while driving in town. The ESC and check engine light came on. I was able to turn the car off and back on and the ESC light went off and acceleration worked...


This may not be your problem but it does bring the vehicle in fail safe you may have a warranty

An improperly functioning input speed sensor or output speed sensor may result in the following conditions:
^ "Check Engine" light on
^ Harsh P-R or P-D engagement shock
^ Transaxle in 3rd gear fail-safe
^ Diagnostic trouble codes 1. Using a GDS, check for DTCs in both the "Engine" and "Automatic Transaxle" menus. Record the DTC and description.
2. From the GDS, select:
^ Vehicle
^ "Auto Transaxle" menu
^ "Current Data"
^ "Input speed sensor" and "output speed sensor". Drive the vehicle and monitor the input and output speed sensors. If the sensors show:
^ Continuous output, the wiring currently has no open/shorts. Go to Step 6.
^ No output, go to Step 3
3. Check the wiring harness visually for an open circuit or short circuit to ground. Check for a pinched harness at the PCM/TCM attachment bolts.
4. Disconnect the connectors at the input and output speed sensor and PCM/TCM. Check for bent pins or pins not fully inserted into the connector.
5. If a harness open/short is found, repair or replace the ECM control harness between the PCM/TCM and transaxle and go to Step 8. If not, go to Step 6.

P0320-is Ignition/Distributor engine speed input circuit. Inspect the wire harness and electrical plug ins in the area of the distributor. Replace the Ignition/Distributor engine speed sensor. How do you time a toyota 4 runner 3.0?


22r-E, 3vz-E And 3f-E Engines

  1. Warm up the engine, then turn it OFF. Connect a timing light to the engine following the manufacturer_s instructions.
  2. Connect a tachometer to both battery terminals. Connect the tachometer probe to the IG-terminal in the check connector box. The check connector box is located next to the underhood fuse and relay box on trucks and 4Runner's; for Land Cruisers, the check connector box is on the firewall. Use the correct adapter to insure a tight fit on the terminal. Not all tachometers, particularly older ones are electrically compatible with this system. Read instructions for your unit before using.

3. Start the engine and run it at idle. Check the idle speed on the tachometer; adjust it to specification if necessary.

4. At the check connector, use a small jumper wire to short the connector at terminal T or TE1 and terminal E1, of the DLC1 as shown. Special service tool (SST) 09843-18020 or its equivalent can be used for this also.

  1. Check the idle speed, then check the ignition timing. The 22R-E should read 5° BTDC, 3VZ-FE should read 10° BTDC and the 3F-E should read 7° BTDC. All of these readings are at idle.

On other engines, the timing mark is visible on the crankshaft pulley

  1. Loosen the distributor pinch bolt just enough that the distributor can be turned. Aim the timing light at the marks on the crankshaft pulley (or the drive plate on 3F-E) and slowly turn the distributor until the correct timing mark aligns with the pointer. Tighten the distributor pinch bolt.
  2. Remove the jumper wire or special service tool (SST) from the DLC1.
  3. Check that the ignition timing advances. At idle the 22R-E should read 10°-14° BTDC, 3VZ-FE should read 8° BTDC, and the 3F-E should read 12° BTDC.
  4. Shut the engine OFF and remove the timing light and tachometer leads.

Air bag light stays on


I had the same issue wit my 2006 Hyunda Santa Fe air bag light staying on. I had the system scanned and it was the passenger bottom seat. It has sensors in the padding that monitor the weight on the seat. If it is over 40-60 pounds then in case of an accident the air bag will deploy. This is to protect children in case they are setting in the front seat. However if the wire sensors over time break and the circuit is open then the air bag light will stay on. The bottom seat is around $300 dollars not counting labor to replace.
