Windstar 200 shift indicator does not move when shift into gears

Recently I have a autorized dealer install a remote start on my wife's 2000 windstar; right after I came out of their shop I've noticed that the shift indicator on the dash does not move when I shift gears; I've tryed to call them inmediately, but they were already closed; anyone knows what's going on? If the problem is not to complicated to solve, I rather fix it myself instead of going back to the shop and have them fix it for me; I will have to switch cars again with my wife and probably lost at least half a day of work to deal with this.

Can you tell me how to get behind the cluster panel? (some sort of a "step by step" type of orientation...) Even if I take the car back to them, It's something that I will like to know how to do.

If you remove the cowling covering the ignition switch steering column (it is two peice held together by two screws at the bottom) you will note a wire with a loop on it... it attaches to the shifter column on a hook. it is adjustable once you have it on.

I had to take mine apart that's how i discovered that wire.

it's fairly easy to do... i cannot recall if you need to lower the steering column to get at it... but again... that's easy as well and i will write you detailed instructions if need be

had to take apart my windstar steering column to replace one of the shafts that controls the ignition... what a joy that was.... tilt steering... it's a bugger to get those springs back may have a special tool but i used a C-clamp. once you have that peice off around the steering wheel it does give you pretty good access and if i remember right you can see the wire very easily

They failed to reatach the cable selector so when you shift it pulls or releases to the correct spot easy to fix just headache to get to. it is a spring loaded cable that hooks to the shifter base. and it is behind the cluster panel. I would let them do it, it wont mess up anything driving it like that. hope this helps you thanks for using fixya!!

Buick gear shifter moves freely and wont shift gears

you can shift it at transmission by hand to neutral or park and have someone inside start the car and you manually put in gear under hood and drive it to shop or garage, wherever

The transmission is in "D" but the tach is showing as if it's in "2". It's not shifting as it normally would in "D". I put it in "2" and it there's no change. I put it in park then neutral and that all...

Your shift indicator is simply stuck. Until you have the time to fix it, your best solution is to start from park then slowly shift to the next setting which is reverse, then neutral then park. All automatic transmissions shift pretty much the same which means you only have to move 3 notches the opposite way from park to be in drive. You don't need a shift indicator for that. Later you can replace the indicator with a dealer factory replacement.

Tach needle buried at park

Purchase a new keyless remote FOB. The signal from the remote is weak and loses contact with the anti-theft module in the instrument cluster. We have 2 sets of keys and 1 worked while the other caused the instrument cluster needles to jump and jam the gear selector. The problem is not the car's battery, alternator, wiring or instrument cluster.

Difficulty shifting 2000 Ford Explorer 5 spd. manual transmission

have you checked to make sure your clutch fluid is topped up? low hydrolic fluid can sometimes cause this.

Check your transmission fluid level if at all possible. If your fluid is low you won't be able to engage any gears as there isn't enough pressurized fluid to shift the clutch or selector in the transmission box. If that's fine, next check the selector link and check it is connected to the transmission (not totally unheard of for it to come loose). Still no joy then it's the clutch...sorry.
