Question about 2000 Ford Focus

1 Answer

My 2005 ford focus is running at a very high idle, or a vacuum leak. How can I tell which one it is? And how hard or how much will it cost to fix.

When I am driving the engine seems like it is at a very high idle, I will be at 40mph let of the gas and increase speed (not by much). I thought it might just have to adjust my idle, but then my check engine light came on

Idle is not adjustable on an electronic controlled car. You have a MIL Lamp lite CHECK FOR CODES then give them to us

Check and see if the EGR valve is leaking, to check this spray water on it at idle, if the water steams off the valve is leaking and is the source of your problem, also are you sure you hooked the new DPFE sensor up right? re-check it..

hesitating when from a standing start, then running well can be caused by having too big a jet size. I dropped the size of the jets on my Holley 4V, and it solved that part of the problem. The accelerator pump will push in too much gas, momentarily "drowning"the engine til you get enuff air to mix with the gas.

SOURCE: ford truck f250 v8 motor idles high

the vacuum leak that causes this high idle is the gasket at the bottom of the upper intake manifold runners, they **** in, done 100's. to confirm this just spray carb cleaner at inside and outside base, when u hit the leak you will hear it. see photo.

My engine seems to idle high when giving the gas.

When you give it the gas, the engine speed is supposed to increase. Don't understand what the problem is. Could you be more specific????

Engine quit when stopped at stop light. Acted as if it was choking then died. Tried restarting. Turns over strong, no start. Thought maybe no gas. Added gas after about 30 minutes. Started first try....

Sounds like the fuel pump is going out. Replace the filter first, as it's only $10. If that doesn't fix it, then it's probably the pump, which is $250.

What is the good idling for a car driving at 40mph? Because it idles at 2000 rpm's and I think thats a little high? the car is 97 toyota camry 4 cyl 2.2. Also after I stop it has a certain smell. Good...

A car cannot idle when you are driving, the term "idle" is only used when the car is stopped and motionless. You mean the the car's RPM's are at 2000 when driving at 40mph. The RPM's are normal at that speed and you cannot change it unless you change the gear ratios inside your Transaxle.

The smell you are referring to may be a oil leak of some sort, you may need to look on the ground after you are parked awhile and see if there is fluid leaking and try to determine what type of fluid it is so you can trace what component is leaking.

Your problem would be in the power valve/accelerator pump circuit. This is the circuit that feeds gas to the engine when the changeover from idle to driving occurs. At idle the vacuum in the carb draws gas so no mechanical means of delivering fuel is needed. The same is true when you reach a consistant driving speed.During the changeover you need a way to increase fuel to the engine by mechanical means. Some carbs have an accelerator pump some call it a power valve. The changes in your intake and cam are enough so the stock circuit is unable to compensate properly. The dealer for the carb should be able to help you out with parts to increase the flow and rate of flow. Hope this helps.

Hi, I have a 2006 Altima with 31,500 miles. Recently, the engine start shaking when car is Idle but I still feel the shake when driving or at red lights. My second problem is a weird loud (humming) noise...

You don't need to change the spark plugs since it has only 31.5 K. The plugs should last 60K. There is a an adjustment at the gas cable end at engine to increase the idle a little bit. You can increase rpm at idle to 600 RPM. Since your RPM at idle is low that why it is shaking at idle, red lights. Let me know it it is shaking at high speed ( 2500 RPM)

Idling to high

Hi jmach,

There is nothing wrong with your vehicle and no need to have anything repaired.... The high idle speed is controlled by the on board ECU...(the Electronic Control Unit).... When starting the vehicle from cold, the automatic enrichment of fuel increases the idle speed... Depending on the ambient air temperature.... the colder the weather, the longer the engine will take longer to return to normal idle speed. Thats how it's designed to operate.
