we have put new rotors and pads on front. And new pads on back. It stops good for awhile then the front starts locking up so bad the car will not even move...

Rear caliper pistons are most likly not as free operating as the front

how does the rear effect the front? to make the front calipers lock up.. please discribe

  • larry warren Dec 10, 2012

brake systems are ballanced thru the master cylinder and the size of calipers giving more preasure to the frontlike about 60% 40%. If the rear are seized or not working the full amount the when you apply brakes more preasure is applied to the front. For example Blanking off rear brakes is how people do burnout. Drive like that and front will always lock up as the back is then not working at all. Its all about ballance

I understand how that works. But what we have is that the front brakes lock up and car want move . Unless you let it sit for awhile. could the abs cause this problem?

  • larry warren Dec 11, 2012

Now we have a whole new ball game. Two areas to look at. 1. front calipers need over haul as they dont retract. Or 2. brake pedal has no freeplay and or the piston in master cylinder is not returning fully. There is a third if you have fitted a new master cylinder recently and that is that the rod from booster is holding piston from returning fully . If you measure the depth on master cylinder and the ammount of protrusion from booster the rod needs to be a tad shorter not longer . does that help at all?

  • chris dunn Dec 12, 2012

Yes we put new pad and rotor on the front because they were so eat up the pistons were out way to far. So we thought replacement of the parts would fit it. But you just say something that hit me about master cyclinder or we need to rebuild calipers

I am assuming you are talking about the front brakes. If that is the case, its possible that one or both of your calipers are seizing thus holding the pads against the rotor. The other possibilities of locking up, are: bent or worn caliper sliders (bolts, in most cases) or believe it or not, front brake hoses. Have a qualified brake shop check these items.

Hi:) Make sure the brake shoes are on the wright side the short shoe goes on the front part of the backing plate and make sure the emergency brakes are loose enough. They are what adjust the brakes (pulling and releasing the brakes adjust the brake slack while backing up) so check the springs and cable for proper installation.

Left front brake locked up. Changed master cyclinder. Have good brakes for an hour then left front keeps getting air in line. No visible leaks (wet spots).anywhere also no lose of fluid.

If left front brake is binding it will cause brake fluid to boil which inturn causes air in system, then soft pedal. [may also explain lock up].

Front left brake keeps locking up

i suspect that you have a bad caliper which is sticking. look there first, and always replace both if on the front, since murphy's law usually applies. thats where 60% of your stopping power comes from. the anti lock system won't normally cause the problem you describe, but a bad caliper will. make sure the rotors are ok as well.
