Thankyou Colin you've been very helpfull. I think it is the MK1V motor (essex ) and it has the Yellow Terra Heads. I did adjust it about three years ago and got the setttings off a mechanic who had the internet system for all makes and models. I also wrote those settings down and they sat for years in my garage and then I transfered it all to a note book, Where the hell did I put the note book !!

Right need to know what cam is fitted as their is a big difference in the settings ,the Zodiac cam was a lower profile which gave a better fuel efficiency then you had the capri cam which was a GT identified by white paint the zodiac was identified by yellow paint mark the granada was red if i recall ,Now the only way to adjust these engines tappets is with the engine running ,what we used to do on the assembly line was to place a cut down cover on the head so the oil didnt all run out but if you jack the car up on one side this will reduce the oil loss. Now make sure that the rocker studs havent lifted up as they are only interference fit and can rise up causing noisy tappets .Now for the life of me i cannot remember all the correct settings but aout 14 and 18 is what i seem to get a feeling for but on the assembly line this was used as a rough guide and it was down to noise ,if noisy then tighten them down till the noise stops ,On a worn engine lift the rocker arm and look under the pad that pushes the valve down for wear but be careful when flatening this down as they were heat treated on the top to around 60 something rockwell C ,But on the A series transit engine the valves had a bearing valve spring cap so it could turn also these engine were designed to be used as a diesel so the casting is a lot heavier than required making them a very heavy engine. But trust the only way to adjust the tappets on these engines is with the engine running also the transit V 4 engines as well. These transits were much loved by bank robbers as well as they could outrun most police noddy cars except the V8 rover lowline of course.Favourite was a diesel tranny with the useless perkins 4108 engine ,mount a V6 in and change the rear diff for a older one from a mk2 zodiac and what a motorway cruiser ideal for a parcel delivery van .Any back to tappet settings ,the capri was listed as 22 exhaust if i remember correctly but on the assembly line they were sort of done seat of pants till noise stopped but on a dodgy one with a low vacumn reading this meant the cam lobes were not right so then you opened the gaps to compensate till the vacumn come up but this meant it was noisy and tappety .The later engines had stelite coated valves and seats so will run with unleaded petrol but use the 98 as the compression ratios were higher but some V4 engines and V6 transit engines had a lower compression ratio to start with to allow to run on the 2 star petrol but these engine would have a white paint mark on the thermostat housing and i dont ever remember building great quantiies of these engines .Mainly V4s for the transits ,watch the oil pump drive as well as they tend to round the end of the drive shaft off if the oil isnt changed regular and these can be pulled out after removing the distributor with a length of petrol pipe pushed over it so you dont need to drop the sump .These engine will run better with them bosch spark plugs with the 3 electrodes on them or fire queens as we knew them they specify these plugs for the seat toledo or golf GT .Now the timing gears behind the from cover are matched pairs designated by the same paint colour on both gears ,white blue yellow ect as the teeth pitch ,ford way of keeping costs down use the rejects, now get it wrong and the gear wheels will wine like hell .If rebuilding the heads make sure you use evostick around the water port holes or it could use water which everyone used to say head gaskets and more cars bit the dust this way than anything ,Again the later engines used a manifold with a different shape air port .one had a flat bottom and the other was rounded top and bottom. If you want maximum fuel economy out of this engine with loiw speed torque for a auto box then use the zodiac cam ,if a manual for racing then the capri cam ,the granny cam being a bit of a intermediate

Crickey Colin you sure know your stuff on the Fords. I know what you mean when adjusting them when running. I have a little 289 Mustang, which I checked the hydraulic (loaded) lifters while running, what a mess ! The V6 is in a Jet Boat, so running it on an angle could be a problem. I remember setting the gaps while cold and just rotating the motor using the alternator belt. Thank you for the great information. Cheers Tony.

in a boat? dont ever remember making marinised versions of the V engine for a boat on the assembly line although do remember making crossflow engines for marinised uses

Yep. Hamilton Jet boats were the front runner for the first Jet units. A good read about Bill Hamilton who pioneered the engineering of them is called 'The Wild Irishman'. Later in the 60s & 70s V6s were being used due to the short length of the motor and their HP. It all depended on the hull size and seating etc. Now it's all power to weight etc. Have a little scan on trade me and have a look at some of the 70s & 80s Jet boats for sale. My one is a 1970 Hamilton Jet 32, has a heat exchanger along with water cooled manifolds and expansion tank. It does around 45mph pulling 3200rpm. I've got to look at the nozzel on the jet unit and the impella to try and get it to 4,500 rpm pulling 55-60mph. It's a trickey mix. At the moment I just want to take the rattle out of the tappets. If your into fishing and you want adventure either up fast shallow flowing rivers or throgh breakers on sandbars, these old girls are great !

WOW you learn something new every day ,make my old cabin cruiser with a 50hp mercury 4stroke look tame here on the med ,Another problem for me though is a neck injury i got in 92 when a van came up the pavement and i dont know anymore other than a neck ache and no nteeth or nose so bouncing about on the med at speed is not my idea of fun ,just a leisurely jaunt over the isle of tabarka and do some snorkelling .Best of british with this endevour though

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Have a look at Trade Me New Zealand and you will be suprised with some of the Jet Boats. Have a Merry Xmas and enjoy the snokelling. Tony

SOURCE: i have to adjust valve

What engine do you have (size)? Valve adjustment is generally a thing of the past after the introduction of hydraulic lifters (no adjustment). In 1994 your engine should have hydraulic lifters and are not adjustable. Is this a high performance engine? New camshaft, lifter, and rocker set that are adjustable?

I need to know how to go about the second procedure for valve clearance on my 1.5l mitsubishi lancer. ive started on TDC AND COMPLETED THE FIRST STEP BUT LEADING ON TO THE SECOND STEP IS TROUBLE?????? HELP

the easiest way is to start at the first valve, first you need to know if the inlet & exhaust valves have the same clearance, starting from the left side of the engine ( standing at the front ) the first valve exhaust, the next two are inlet, the next two are exhaust, the next two are inlet & the last one is exhaust, what you do is turn the engine over by hand ( this might be easier if you remove the spark plugs ) until the valve opens & closes, after it closes turn the engine a little more & adjust the clearance on that valve, repeat this action on every valve until they have all been adjusted.......hope this helps......cheers.
