SOURCE: 1998 Saturn SL idler pulley broke off and bolt is stuck in engine

The idler pully can be removed without removing the engine. I have replaced mine in my 97 SL2. As to the bolt breaking off, that is strange. I assume that if the bolt broke off, then the idler pully also fell off. If I remember, the space is somewhat limited, so getting a removal tool in there could be very difficult, especially if the bolt is flush with the mounting hole. That doesn't sound like a fun project. If bolt protrudes, maybe you can get some vise-grips on it and turn it out.

SOURCE: belt tensioner assmebly went bad

Take the Right hand front wheel off, remove the plastic splash panel. Obviously, first remove tne belt. the tensioner should be slightly up in the wheel opening. Remove the pully, center bolt, remove the bolts attaching the tensioner asm. Local autoparts store should have replacement for around $30.00. Replace follow instructions backwards. While at auto store reference saturn manual for torque to tighten bolts when replacing. Do not over torque into aluminum block.

A loose idler pulley threw the surpentine belt off - feels like bearings inside the pulley are shot.

will try to help. if the pulley has wobble,it's bad and in need of replacement. not a hard repair to preform. turn the bolt on the idler pulley thats bad counter clockwise, remove the bolt and pulley. replace with new pulley. you'll need to follow the belt routing on the hood of your car[a small decal that shows how to replace your serpentine belt] to replace the belt when you've replaced that pulley. if you do not have a diagram of your belt routing, make sure to ask where ever you purchase the idler pulley from. if not then post your question here and we'll be happy to help! i also suggest that while you're there replacing that pulley, you check all the other pulleys for wobble, just in case theres another problem you don't yet see. hope this helps and if you need further assistance please don't hesitate to post your question!thank you for choosing fixya.com

Can a bad idler pulley on a 1997 saturn with a 1.9 liter sohc engine cause a plastic like ticking noise. The pulley has a little play in it and all the other pulley seem to be good with no play in them. ...

Sometimes the idler pulley can begin to rattle a bit, the noise is most often associated with the the idle pulley damper mounts. Just a tiny movement here can cause that audible clicking. It does not harm the engine and can usually be heard only at idle so if yo can live with it, great.

"HOW TO":
Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
1. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.

My 2002 Vue is making an "airplane" noise in the engine. What is this and how do you fix it?

Hello mb.
When this type of noise occurs it is often a bearing on one of the pulleys the drive belt turns.
It could be an alternator, an AC compressor bearing, an idler pulley bearing or a tensioner pulley bearing.
You will need to remove the drive belt and rotate each one by hand (take the ignition key out, just for safety reasons)
Feel for play and roughness in the bearings and replace the one that is causing the noise.

Another noise to check on is the power steering system.
If the fluid is low it can allow air to enter the fluid and mix in to create a whining noise. Check the level and add if necessary.
Look for a leak if it is low.
Ask me if you need more advise on this.
Thank you.

Be carefule of hot parts and rotating/moving belts and pulleys.

If its a whine, most likely the bearings on the idler pulley or the bearings on the ac compressor clutch.
-To trouble shoot with engine running and ac on spray wd40 on bearing area of clutch then wait a few seconds to see if sound goes away. If not then try bearing area(behind bolt of pulley) of idler. This will work as temporay fix, but ultimatly you must replace bad bearing.Do NOT spray on belt or pulley surface.

If its a squeal could be the belt is loose and needs to be replaced or dressed.
-Belt dressing can be spray directly on belt while engine is running and ac is on.

Loose serpitine belt on my saturn wagon

needs a new belt tentioner. it will run you from between $60-$80 depending on where you go. but thats the only thing that would cause your belt to be loose. while the belt is off i would check all the pulleys for "play" by trying to wiggle them, if the wiggle they need to be replaced as well, its common on saturns for the belt tentioner and idler pulley to go together.
