Push the interior light defeat button (by the headlamp switch) 4 times in a row. Auto headlights now off. To turn feature back on, push button 4 more times or turn truck off then restart.

My 89 chevy custom deluxe won't start without the lights bein on . Now the lights won't turn on so we can't start the truck. Where should we start first to track down the problem ?

what lights there are over 30 lamps. on all cars.(MOST)

IF you meant head lights then fix that first.
the head lights failing shows the main power feed from the battery
is bad, (corrosion at any point , battery #1 due to acid there)

2002 mercury sable auto head lights don't work have to turn on manuall

If that was my car, I would go to the wiring diagrams
I buy for all my vehicles when I first get them

From there you make some choices as to how the system
works & where to start your testing or in an extremely rare
case replace something

I simply can't tell you if that switch you turn is bad or it
is good & it's output goes to a module, need to see the
system on paper

How do you change front headlight for a Chevy 2002 s-10

Open the hood of the truck and just inside the front frame rail behind the lights there will be 2 clips kind of sticking up. Just pull them up and out. The composite head light fixture can now be pulled out through the front. You must lift slightly, at least on the units with embedded fog lamps since there are 2 vertical tabs in addition to the stubs which you released when you removed the clips. You will have to press the safety catch and turn the lamp base to get to the lamp.DO NOT TOUCH THE LIGHT BULB OR LAMP WITH YOUR BARE HANDS! THE OIL FROM YOUR SKIN CAN CAUSE THE HALOGEN LAMP TO EXPLODE! THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT THESE LAMPS GENERATE A LOT OF HEAT so use clean gloves or a clean rag to change the actual lamp then re insert the lamp base into the composite housing. Push the whole fixture back into its bay and replace the retaining clips. Getting them back in is a little more tricky than getting them out but make sure that you get both retaining clips back in right or your head lights will not be pointing in the correct direction and could also come loose.
Thank you for using Fixya and good luck

Chevy s10 brake lights

If the problem is that the brake lights will not turn off, the problem is most likely the CHMSL relay. An easy check is to take the cover off the fuse block mounted on the driver's side fender well and swap the fog lamp relay with the CHMSL relay. If that fixes it, just get a new relay for the fog lamps and you're good to go. Note, my 2002 s10 does not have fog lamps, but it still had the relay populated in the fuse block.
