Some excellent shop you go to

They never have diagnosed an overheating issue!!

I surely can't guess either but would be checking for
exhaust gases in the coolant & possible head gasket

I would do a cylinder leak down test even if I was going
in the wrong direction

I would do a cylinder contibution test electrically

The shops stopped short of using all the toys in the box
so to speak

Alternator surely was a different issue as was most likely
the battery

There are two freeze out plugs at the rear of the block (V8) and many v6 engines. If coolant is coming from where you say, likely they have failed. Unfortunately, the only way to reach them is to remove engine or transmission, It's rare that they fail because they are "protected " by the bellhousing, but can still rot from the inside out. There is no sealer known to man that will fix this. It's a shame that you need to do all that work for a pair of $2.00 plugs, but that's what needs to happen.

You should probably replace the temperature sensor first, make sure the car is indeed overheating.

If after replacing the temp sensor, and the problem does exist, then buy a flush kit, and back flush the system, it may be clogged.

You don't have the experience to do so, as your here

A mechanic would disconnect the battery and check each circuit for a voltage drain by disconnecting the fuses and breakers. Anything with a relay or way to use electricity such as a light bulb or switch can cause a small short to ground or voltage drain.

No not the garage but if difficulty in cranking then i would say a battery problem ,as for sluggish when you did get it started then this could be the power being drained by the alternator to charge the battery ,Modern vehicles can have some monster alternators fitted of up to anything to 120 amps which is a lot of power to drain from the engine
