While you were at the parts store did they perform an alternator output test. If not then the alternator is suspect. A winding could've failed, rectifier bridge(diodes), or the internal voltage regulator(if not in the ECU). Get it tested. that may be your problem Greg. Hope this helps

It's the valley of the engine underneath the intake manifold. It's about an $800 job because the top of the engine has to come off. However, unless you have a supercharged xterra it shouldn't effect performance. Also, the knock sensor will not trip the check engine light, as it does not indicate a primary problem, so if your light is on you should have another code that should be fixed first.

First thing to remember autozone people ar not experts in the automative diagnostic world, if they were they would be earning 50 - 75,ooo per year as a technician, not 25,000 as a desk jockey. You need to go to a mechanic that has a computer to hookup to your car and tell you what the check engine light is on for. then you can fix the exact problem instead of poking around in the dark at the problem until you get lucky and have it fixed for a week or two,
