Changing coolent thermostat

Is it neccessary to drain cooling system to install new thermostat.-or just remove over flow tank cap to releve pressure and then drain down coolent by drain cock at bottom of raidiator ??

Take the cap off then sqeeze the top hose hold it then replace the cap then take it out thats how i do them but it also depends on what make and where it is the ones on the top of the engine are easy just do as i said and you will loose very little fluid

If the car is air locked...

Start it up , turn your heat on full blast.Then remove your resevoir cap. Let the car heat up to normal temp , at this point i would check to see if your fan is turning on. If you watch close inside your resevoir it will be bubbles or bubbling, let it run until you have no more air coming out.(no bubbles, if nessesary top off with fluid to the recomended level. Tightnen up your cap ,making sure it is seated properly and IS tight. Then go for a drive see if your still overheating.

Cooling system issues
With an already hot normal operating temperature of 220 °F (104 °C) prior to the recall switching to a 195 °F (91 °C) thermostat, the mid-mounted engine utilized long pipes to carry coolant to the front-mounted radiator. This demanded that a special coolant filling procedure be followed to prevent severe overheating. Simply pouring coolant into the thermostat housing (on the engine) would leave an air bubble in the radiator, while adding coolant just to the radiator would leave an air bubble in the engine's coolant passages. Proper procedure (with engine idling and the thermostat removed, filling the thermostat housing, burping the bubble out of the radiator by cracking open the radiator cap until coolant exits) must be followed in order to ensure an air-free cooling system.
A second problem has become common as more Fieros are being serviced by shops unfamiliar with their design. The under-body coolant tubes are positioned in such a way that a casual glance beneath the car will not suggest their fragility. As a result, many have been crushed by shop lifts, resulting in a near complete lack of engine cooling. The age of the car means that even GM dealerships may now be unaware of the proper jacking methods.
Lastly, the absence of a spare tire (at the front of the car, right behind the radiator) could have an effect on coolant system performance. i dont know who wrote this and i dont take credit for it

10 minuts really isnt enough time to even get up to operating tempature much less overheat. I would suspect from what you describe you may have a head gasket problem. compression from the cylinder will leak into the cooling system and push out the coolant. The fact that you have oil residue may confirm this. Does the temp guage read high when this happens or a warning light come on?... im suspecting probably not. There also could be an outside chance of a cracked head or block. most likely not but always an outside chance. Good Luck!!

SOURCE: no heat. changed waterpump, no coolant leak, new cap on expansion tank, thermostat good. heater core appears good there's heat for a few minutes then it goes cool.

sounds like electric door motor is bad in front of the heater core. door is'nt opening

Refilling Procedure




Notice: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant. If coolant other than DEX-COOL?"¢ is added to the system, the engine coolant will require change sooner: at 50 000 km (30,000 miles) or 24 months.






  1. Close the radiator drain cock.


  2. If previously removed, install the engine block drain plugs.


  3. When installing the drain plugs, use pipe sealer GM P/N 12346004.




    Important: On vehicles equipped with the 3.4L engine, open the coolant air bleed valve. The coolant air bleed valve is located on the top of the thermostat bypass pipe/heater pipe assembly. Close the valve once a continuous stream of coolant is expelled from the valve.



  4. Fill the surge tank to the base of the filler neck.


  5. Start the engine with the pressure cap off. Run the engine until the upper radiator hose starts to get hot.


  6. If the coolant level in the surge tank is low, add the proper mix of coolant until the level reaches the full cold line.



  7. Important: After servicing the cooling system, and if the vehicle is equipped with an intermittent low coolant light, an occasional low coolant light may be encountered during some extreme driving maneuvers. This complaint should be eliminated by removing the surge tank cap and adding coolant to a level just at or above the full cold line when the system is cold.



  8. Install the cap onto the tank with hand tight pressure.



Recycling Procedure




Important: Dispose of used coolant in a proper fashion, such as in a used coolant holding tank. Never pour used coolant down the drain. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is a very toxic chemical. Disposing of ethylene glycol antifreeze into the sewer system is both illegal and ecologically unsound.



There is currently no approved method for recycling used DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant into new DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant. DEX-COOL?"¢ coolant can be recycled into new conventional coolant. Consult local listings for coolant recycling facilities in your area.

How to change the thermostat house in a Dodge 2004 intrepid


Check this procedure for...
2.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable.
    CAUTION Do not remove pressure cap with the system hot and under pressure because serious burns from coolant can occur.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Remove radiator lower hose from thermostat housing.
  4. Remove nuts from heater tube flange studs.
  5. Loosen starter bolt at heater tube bracket.
  6. Pull heater tube out of thermostat housing and position out of the way.
  7. Remove bolt and two studs.
  8. Remove thermostat housing, O-ring and thermostat.
  9. Remove thermostat housing bolts.
To install:
  1. Clean gasket sealing surfaces.
    NOTE Install thermostat with the bleed valve located at the 12 o'clock position, between tabs on seal.
  2. Install thermostat and seal into thermostat housing .
  3. If removed, install two studs.
  4. Install thermostat, thermostat housing and O-ring and bolt. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs.(12 Nm).
  5. Lubricate new heater return tube O-ring with coolant.
  6. Position heater return tube flange over two studs. Install nuts.
  7. Tighten retaining nuts to 53 inch lbs.(6 Nm).
  8. Tighten starter bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54.3 Nm).
  9. Connect the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing. Install hose clamps.
  10. Refill cooling system.
  11. Inspect for leaks.
  12. Connect negative cable.

3.2L & 3.5L Engines
  1. Disconnect negative cable.
    CAUTION Do not remove pressure cap with the system hot and under pressure because serious burns from coolant can occur.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  4. Disconnect electrical connectors from engine oil and power steering pressure switches.
  5. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses from thermostat housing.
  6. Remove thermostat housing bolts.
  7. Remove housing, thermostat, and gasket.
    NOTE The OEM thermostat is staked in place at the factory. To ensure proper seating of replacement thermostat, carefully remove the bulged metal from the thermostat housing using a suitable hand held grinder. It is not necessary to restake the replacement thermostat into the thermostat housing.
To install:
  1. Position gasket on thermostat and housing.
  2. Install thermostat housing, gasket and mounting bolts onto block. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  3. Install radiator hose.
  4. Install bypass hose.
  5. Connect electrical connectors from engine oil and power steering pressure switches.
  6. Connect negative cable.
  7. Fill cooling system.
  8. Inspect for leaks.
  9. Lower vehicle on hoist.

How do you remove a thermostat from a buick park avenue


  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the engine cover.
  3. Disconnect the Inlet hose from the housing.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing bolts (A), thermostat housing (B), and the Thermostat (D).
  5. Clean the gasket mating surfaces and the housing and intake port.
To Install:
  1. Install the Thermostat (D).
  2. Install the thermostat housing (B) with a new gasket (C) and torque the bolts (A) to 15 ft-lb (20 Nm).
  3. Connect the inlet hose.
  4. Install the engine cover.
  5. Refill the cooling system.

To Drain:
NOTE: Draining the cooling system with the pressure cap installed will siphon the coolant from the overflow tank.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Open the radiator drain **** and drain the coolant into a drain pan.
  3. Empty and wash out the coolant reservoir with soap and water.
  4. Inspect the coolant if discolored flush the system before refilling.
To Fill:
CAUTION
Follow the procedure below to insure the coolant is at the proper level. A coolant level that is too high or too low could cause engine damage.
  1. Close the radiator drain **** and lower the vehicle.
  2. Slowly fill the cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL antifreeze and clean drinkable water.
  3. Install the coolant pressure cap and start the engine.
  4. Run the engine at 2,000-2,500 RPM until the engine reaches normal operating temperature than let the engine idle for 3 minutes.
  5. Turn the engine off and let the engine cool off.
  6. Top off the coolant and check the concentration of the coolant using the (J 26568) coolant and battery tester.

After the car warms up coolent leaks out of the radiator cap overflow pipe, I already changed the cap but it still leaks. I checked the fuse for the radiator cooling fans and it is OK. What can be the...


Sounds like you need a new thermostat. Cap will only hold so much pressure and then it's made to release. Your cooling system is building up too much pressure for cap to hold.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that small animals and domestic pets are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze and may attempt to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or from puddles on the ground. This can be fatal if ingested in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused until it becomes contaminated or several years old. To avoid injuries from scalding fluid and steam, DO NOT remove the radiator cap while the engine is running or if the engine or radiator is still hot.
  1. Before draining the cooling system, place the heater's temperature selector to the full WARM position while the engine is running.
  2. Turn the engine off before it gets hot and the system builds pressure.
  3. Make sure the engine is still cool and the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
  4. Remove and drain the reservoir recovery tank.
  5. Place a fluid catch pan under the radiator. Turn the radiator draincock counterclockwise to open, then allow the coolant to drain.
  6. Remove the radiator cap by performing the following:
    1. Slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the detent.
    2. If any residual pressure is present, WAIT until the hissing stops.
    3. After the hissing noise has ceased, press down on the cap and continue rotating it counterclockwise to remove it.
  7. Allow the coolant to drain completely from the vehicle.
  8. Close the radiator draincock. NOTE: When filling the cooling system, be careful not to spill any coolant on the drive belts or alternator. To refill:
  9. Make sure the heater temperature is placed in the full hot position.
  10. Open the bleed screw on the thermostat housing.
  11. Install the reservoir recovery tank and using a 50/50 mixture of the recommended antifreeze and clean water, fill the cooling system reservoir tank to the FULL mark. WARNING
    If any coolant is spilled on a painted surface, wipe it up immediately.
  12. Begin filling the radiator with the 50/50 mixture of coolant. Watch for air being released from the open the bleed screw on the thermostat housing. Once coolant mixture begins to steadily flow through the bleeder, close the bleeder.
  13. Continue to fill the radiator until the radiator is full.
  14. Start the engine and allow the engine to run until the cooling fans operate two times, making sure to top off the system as the fluid level drops.
  15. After the cooling fan has run for the second time, top off the system as necessary, then install the radiator cap.
  16. Allow the engine to run and inspect the cooling system for leaks.

This is for the 2.7L:

2.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect negative cable.

  6. Remove thermostat housing bolts.
  7. Remove housing, thermostat, and gasket.

    NOTE

How to change the thermostat


Alero, Grand Am 1999-2005 Thermostat - Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine
  1. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, remove the exhaust manifold, as outlined in this section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolts.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.

  5. Remove the thermostat.

To install:
  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.
  3. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt. Tighten the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, install the exhaust manifold, as outlined in this section.
  5. Fill the cooling system.

3.1L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system to a level below the thermostat housing.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Disconnect the surge tank line from the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove thermostat housing-to-intake manifold attaching bolt and nut, then remove the housing.
  6. Remove the thermostat.

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket surfaces completely.
  2. Insert the thermostat in the intake manifold.
  3. Attach the thermostat housing to the intake manifold.
  4. Install the mounting bolt and nut. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  6. Connect the surge tank line to thermostat housing.
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable, remove the radiator cap, then start the engine. Allow the engine to run with radiator cap removed, until the upper radiator hose becomes hot (thermostat open). With the engine idling, add coolant to the radiator until the level is up to the bottom of the filler neck.
  9. Install the radiator cap, making sure the arrows line up with the overflow tube.

3.4L Engine
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the air cleaner.
  3. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
  4. Disconnect the surge tank line fitting from the coolant outlet.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing to intake manifold bolts.
  6. Remove the thermostat housing outlet and thermostat
  7. Clean the mating surfaces.

To install:
  1. Install the thermostat and housing outlet.
  2. Install the thermostat housing bolts. Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  3. Install exhaust crossover pipe.
  4. Connect the surge tank line fitting to the coolant outlet. Tighten the fittings to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  5. Install the air cleaner.
  6. Fill the cooling system.
  7. Inspect the system for leaks.

Engine overheating


The best way to flush it would be to take off the bottom radiator hose and pump water through the fill nozzle after all the coolent is out you can then hook the hose back up and replace it with new coolant.

1997 Town & Country Radiator Thermostat


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
2.4L Engine
See Figure 1
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Place a large drain pan under the radiator drain plug. Allow the cooling system to sufficiently cool down before opening the drain plug to avoid personal injury. Drain the coolant to below the thermostat level.
  3. Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the thermostat housing.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing bolts and coolant outlet connector of the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove the thermostat assembly from the vehicle and discard. Discard the old thermostat gasket.

  1. Clean all gasket mating surfaces.
  2. Install the new thermostat in the correct position. If equipped, align the air bleed valve on top of thermostat to the vent recess in the water box (engine side) of the thermostat housing.
  3. Dip the new new gasket in clean water and install on the water box surface of the thermostat housing.
  4. Install the thermostat housing over the gasket and thermostat, making sure the thermostat is in correct position.
  5. Install the thermostat housing bolts and torque to 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  6. Reconnect the radiator hose. Tighten the radiator hose clamp.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system.
  9. Pressure test for leaks.
3.0L, 3.3L and 3.8L Engines
See Figures 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Place a drain pan under the radiator drain and drain the cooling system to just below the thermostat level. Close the drain.
  3. Remove the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing, then remove the housing.
  4. Remove the thermostat and discard the gasket.

  1. Make certain the bolt threads are clean. Threaded bolt holes exposed to coolant are subject to corrosion and should be cleaned with a small wire brush or correct size thread-cutting tap. Install the housing, making sure the thermostat is still in the recess, and tighten the retaining bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm) for 3.0L engine or to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) for 3.3L and 3.8L engines. Reconnect the upper radiator hose and tighten the hose clamp.
  2. Connect the negative battery cable.
  3. Fill and bleed the engine cooling system with a clean 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze and water.

  1. Make sure the radiator is full and start the vehicle.
CAUTION Do not remove the radiator cap once the vehicle is warm. Coolant is under pressure and may cause scalding or personal injury.
  1. Run the vehicle until the thermostat opens. Check the coolant level in the overflow tank and fill if necessary.
  2. Pressure test for leaks.
