Question about Cars & Trucks

My daughters 2000 2.4L Cavalier won't start.

It cranks but will not start. I bought a new battery because it was starting when it was jumped, When the new battery did not fix it, I tested and replace the Ignition Control Module and Crankcase Position Sensor still not luck. Any Ideas? So you know everything, I am not sure if this matters but she brought it home saying the transmission wouldn't shift. I didn't get to it for 3 days and that's when it wouldn't start and began all the above "non-fixes"

Have alternator check out, if you have fault in the alternator and its not charging battery it will cause pcm problems which will cause transmission shift problems.have alternator checked first.like dennis said by car being pcm control need have code scan but check see if alternator charging battery like it should.IF ALL IS GOOD, HAVE STARTER CHECKED ALSO IF CAR START WHEN JUMP START COULD HAVE BAD CORRODED BATTERY CABLES ALSO.HAVE VECHICLE CODE SCAN MAKE SURE PCM NOT FAILING BECAUSE IT CONTROLL SHIFTING.DONT BUY NEW PARTS HAVE VECHICLE CODE SCAN FIRST GUESSING GAME COST LOTS SPENDING MONEY NO FAME.

Yea I am learning about the spending and it to close to Christmas for that. So I had a Scan Reader on the car. Only code came up was in the ABS section "C1275- PCM requested ETS/TCS to be disabled" Aditionally we checked the throttle body and when it was turning over it was blowing air OUT of the throttle body. Suspect Converter clogged so I dropped the exhaust and it still will not start. I will check the Alternator and Starter but they were both new on the engine purchased right before I bought it a year ago. Thanks Guys for your suggestions and I will try to respond when we have those checked. I might have to go to the pros for this one. (After Christmas)

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM or ECM,ECU), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems can and do cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms.

SOURCE: "Cranks, but won't start". Replaced fuel pump, CKP, ICM & nothing

If the engine cranks over normally when you attempt to start you car, but the engine does not start, the problem may be NO FUEL, NO SPARK or NO COMPRESSION. The engine needs adequate fuel pressure, a properly timed spark and normal compression to start.

1) To find why the engine won't start, remove the air inlet tube from the throttle body, push the throttle open and spray a small amount of aerosol starting fluid into the engine. Crank the engine. If it has spark and compression but NO FUEL, it will start and run a few seconds before dying. If it does NOT start, it probably has NO SPARK.

2)Another method to check for spark is to pull a spark plug wire off of a spark plug (if it has plug wires, coil-on-plug ignitions do not) and place the open end of the plug wire near a metal surface on the engine. Have a helper crank the engine while you watch for a spark. DO NOT hold the wire while doing this as it can shock you. If you see a spark, the problem is not spark, but most likely NO FUEL or NO COMPRESSION. If you do not see a spark, the problem is in the IGNITION CIRCUIT.

3)Proper fuel pressure is critical for fuel injected engines to start and run. You should hear the fuel pump inside the fuel tank buzz for a couple of seconds when the ignition is turned on (no buzz means the pump is not running and the engine is not getting fuel). You can smell the tailpipe for gasoline vapors after cranking the engine. If you smell gas, the problem is likely not fuel but NO SPARK. You can also remove the plastic cap and press the schraeder valve test fitting on the fuel rail to see if there is any fuel pressure to the engine (not a very accurate test because fuel pressure must be at a certain level for the engine to start, for that you need a gauge). Even so, no fuel at the fuel rail would tell you fuel is not getting to the engine..

SOURCE: 96 cavalier wont start has fuel but no fire....

An idea would be checking the wires FROM either the cam or crank sensor. I had a VERY similar problem. I had a wire burnt on the wire harness....it was a factory problem. Take a look along the harness coming from these two components...wires could be burnt. Easy fix is to locate it and resplice the wires.

wont crank or wont start.??
no car starts , if it cant crank. (unless push starter (M/T magic)
that is not a trans sensor its the PRN switch.
ill answer for, wont CRANK !
it wont crank even with a good battery (charged) or jump started.
1: bad start
2: bad wires to same.
so hot wire the starter small wire, the key start line is tiny.
cranks. , starter good, no crank starter bad or cables bad.
if it cranks hot wired, then the key line is dead.
easy, huh?

When you jump started the vehicle, it started as normal and you drove to a shop to have a new battery installed.?? Correct??

1. Who removed the old battery and installed the new one?

2. Did the car start normally immediately after the new battery was fitted? How frequently were you able to drive the car on the new battery before the problem you described appeared?

3. Has anything been done to the vehicle since the new battery was fitted.?

When you say it won't start, do you mean it cranks but won't fire, or it just won't crank? If it just won't crank, you could be having an issue with the starter relay. The often become intermittent before failure. Many owners do not know there is a starter relay because it was added as a recall item i order to protect the iginition switch from burnout. The starter relay is located in the very front of the engine compartment, just to the left of the battery, on the back side of the radiator crossmember.

I have a 1998 Chevy Cavalier that I can not figure out why it won't start. The following list of parts are brand new: Battery, PCM, Park Neutral Safety Switch, Alternator, Ignition Switch, and finally...

Your car has a sealed transmission, in order to check it you have to go to the dealer or a transmission

shop, its not owner servicable. takes dextron vi, 4 speed 7.4 quarts, 3 speed 4quarts

And as far as the no start, are your plugs getting voltage, if not check your coil, if there is no spark

to your plugs the car will not fire up. good luck!
