1980 Cadillac Biarritz 368 turning catalytic red

Please help the motor is running rich it is shooting blu flames out of pipe I took off new catalytic converter so it won't ruin it,I change EVERTHING.it only turned red for 3 minutes I shut off car and took it off,hope its still good,one question I have as we'll when I put spark wires on I looked at picture of how to do wires and the distributor cap doesn't sit straight like pic it's turned to left so I used the four screws in pic to figure out where to put wires in order hope its right,if not can anybody tell me how to recheck wires so they are correct firming order

has anyone told you it might be the coil i think you have more than one on this car.i know you have spent a lot of money usually coils are the problem at least try that.is this a v6?let me know.

on the intake manifold you will see 8 numbers, this is your firing order
from the front of the car the left side numbers are 1,3,5,7 and the right side are 2,4,6,8. now ont the distributor cap there should be a number 1 at one of the plug towers. you start there with #1 plug wireand continue.
on a chevy the firing order is 18436572 and this is the order you put the wires on the cap. now the second problem i don't know right off hand which way the rotor turns on your engine. so remove the cap and crank the engine over and see which way the rotor turns, this is the order you put the wires back on the cap. hope this helps

I have 1998 ford expedtion runs rough pipes get red hot. took pipes loose. no power still. put new plugs no luck please help!


It takes a lot of heat to make the exhaust pipes get hot enough to glow red. It is a dangerous condition and can lead to a vehicle fire. A clogged catalytic converter or manifold could cause this, but ultimately the heat from the exhaust fumes is not exiting the system properly. Even a clogged tail pipe could cause this. A vandal might have stuck something in the end of the tail pipe.
It is running rough because it cannot push the exhaust out and therefore cannot take in enough air.
Regardless of the cause, have this inspected and the blockage/clog removed repaired and do not continue to drive the vehicle with this condition.

So i have a 1981 cadillac eldorado biarritz with a 368 cid i changed spark plug wires dis and rotor ig coil fuel pump fuel filter ecm and still not runing right idk what else to do the check engine lite is...


From your description it sounds as if you have insufficient current to support the electronics and lights . Check the condition and of the alternator drive belt. Have the alternator output checked . If you have continual jump starts then unless it is done correctly there is a chance that the ECM is damaged . But everything points to a low out put from the alternator

My first question would be is the check engine light on ?
If the exhaust got hot enough to melt the end pipe, the catalytic converter is probably toast too.
It could be a leaking injector, or an ignition problem, or something else.

You do not mean cranking,the starter turns
over the motor,that is cranking, is it not

You mean it doesn't start,that is a NO Start Condition

Lets use common sense here

You didn't need to ask any questions here
because the exhaust converter gets red hot & the
car is not only unuseable but overheats

Your looking at at least $1000.00 to diagnose &
resolve many problems

The converter is 14 years old & if it wasn't red hot,
it is time to replace it

It is hot for several reasons,you did not say what motor is in there

The timing is most likely an issue

Also you can not replace the converter until you replace
the spark plugs,get rid of any cylinder misfires,rich fuel conditions,fix fuel trim,& such, all of which along with timing
& I mean serious mechanical repairs, have attributed to ruining
the converter,oxygen sensors,all of them, from the heat
& the list goes on.

Lot to have checked out & you can't do it in your driveway
with no experience & no professional test equipment

My 1988 lincoln town will die after running a few blocks. Could it be the catalytic converter being clogged?


Have you checked the fuel pressure at the motor with a gauge ?

You also should check volume & know if your loosing fuel when
it shuts off,not an easy thing to do

You have an older less complicated OBD1 System, so the data
we have on newer OBD2 (1996 on) actually would help

If you want to spend the money ,you could have a scope put on the
pump motor to confirm it is worn out

The Exhaust Converter question is easy

They last 12 to 14 years & then you just replace it,
but only after you look at fuel trim & do the O2 Sensors,
so you have no rich condition that would ruin the new converters

How about timing chain being worn & gears stripped ?

Put a timing light on it, then put the pick up on a wire
half way thru the firing order & see if they timing is
the same.

The exhaust converter should last 12 to 14 years

So your vehicle has not had a happy life

Most likely many cylinder misfires & a rich fuel
condition & possible other issues have ruined the
converter,if it is even ruined

The question as you explained it leads me to believe
you don't have the tools & experience to do what needed
to be done to the exhaust system or diagnosing any OBD2
issues such as oxygen sensors

need a repair shop or dealer

Lincoln mark 8 starts but won't stay running


Yeah... particularly the O2 sensors.. running rich ... weak
and intermittent...

Been there... Ultimately gave up a took mine to dealer.
After floundering around (and seeing I had already been EVERYWHERE they were looking) for two weeks...

They found one of the catalytic converters was collapsing blocking the exhaust... (jobbed it ou to a local muffler shop).

I have still never identified an elegant way to diagnose this issue...

Got to a point where it would not run...

At that point (had I known) I would have liked to try to remove the catalytic converter at the header to see if it would actually run
(CAN'T... one piece)

Liquid wrench, & ear plugs would figure prominently in this process...

ELSE
do look up you muffler & cat prices BEFORE going to an EXHAUST SHOP ($$$$)...

I figure I paid $1700 where a mere $700 would have been pricy
(installed... I bet you can do better).
