It can be worn out fan belt or the fan is got dried up and needs lubrication.Inspect fan belt.

hi the cold can make the belt damp causing the noise your having but tightening the belt should solve your problem.

You may find that its not the belt thats squeking but it could be one of the pulleys but you wont know witch one unless you can hear where the noise is coming from or if you have the belt off and can turn each pulley listening for the noise.
Hopefully its just the belt needs tightening so go this way first but if you still have the noise then the chances are you have a dry bearing on one of the pulleys.

It sounds like you have a broken serpentine belt tensioner. The tensioner should always be tight, it is spring loaded and you would have had to release the tension on it to have put the new belt on.Depending on what engine that is in yours, this could be an easy fix or a hard fix. The tensioner on a 2.2L is made into a large plate bracket that is attached to the front on the engine and several other items have to come off to replace it.The tensioner on the 3.1L v6 is smaller and has one bolt that holds it on.Either one is available at the local auto parts store.

this is done by locating the spring loaded tensioner and taking a 3/8" ratchet and pushing. it is only spring loaded. make sure you follow the routing diagram or if one is not handy under the hood, draw it out as to not forget. it ONLY goes on one way. make sure also that the writing on the belt, you can read it normally without having to stand on the engine. if you dont these belts have the potential to squeek like a bad pulley or belt.

When it is cold outside my car makes a squeal type noise when I start it.

Fan belt is wet and slippery just make old worn out / loose belts worse

Tighten the belt and examine it to see if it needs replacing

Fan belt is making noise.

If your fan belt is squealing and changes pitch when you accelerate or let off the gas or squeals at first then tapers off, then it is slipping. If it is slipping you could replace the belt (probably a good idea considering the age of the car), or as a temporary fix you can spray the belt with belt dressing. Belt dressing is only a few bucks at any local auto parts store and comes in a spray can. Follow directions on the can.

If it is a different type of noise like a grinding or rattling noise, it could actually be a pulley or any of the devices the belt is used to drive, these can include power steering, AC compressor, idler pulley or water pump to name a few.

My best advice is to replace the belt, and toss the old one in the trunk as an emergency spare. The belt should cost under $20.00 and is money well spent as it is cheaper then being stranded and needing to be towed.

My car is jerking violently, in 2nd gear mainly, and has progressively gotten worse. Is this a gear box problem? Also, my tiing belt and two fan belst were done recently and now they squeal on start up...

The fan/compressor belt(s) are loose and if you let them keep squealing they'll glaze, loose traction and need replacing again. I'll bet you have a fuel system problem. Change your inline fuel filter and see if there's improvement. Cheap, fast, easy to do. If that helps the problem then, we've got our culprit: Dirty fuel tank. This is an easy fix. Drop the tank, drain it, pressure wash (at least use a hose nozzle) it out thoroughly and drain. At this point fumes will be negligable and a heat gun or hair dryer can be used through the fill hole to dry it out.
If changing the filter makes no difference then you may already have build up in your carb./injector jets. If you have a carb, it might need to be rebuilt. If you have injectors one or more might need replacing. 2nd and 3rd are the hardest working gears which would explain why 2nd shows the most problems.

is it comming from the serp belt?look when the car is off to see if the belt looks brown and shiny and or cracked,,it could be the belt is loose or just old and worn and slipping on the pulleys,,may be your noise,or if you mean squealing while driving it could be the brake pads are low and the low indicator squealers are hitting the rotors to let you know the pads are low and need replacement

I have a 2000 geo metro that the fan belt squeals when its cold-do I have to change the water pump when I change the belt?

As long as the squeal is from the belt and the pump is not leaking, I don't see any reason to change the water pump. If it is the main drive belt and not the A/C belt, you use the alternator for belt tension. You don't have to remove the screws, you only need to loosen them enough to allow the alternator to move. If I remember correctly, There are 2 bolts. 1 on a track which allows it to move in and out and the other more or less acts like the hinge. The A/C belt (if you have A/C) has its own tensioner which is easier to get to under the car. 2 screws, 1 locks it, the other is the adjustment. I am going by memory so if I'm not quite right that is why. I hope this helps.

Squealing noise under the hood

No, The fan clutch will not make a Noise it will just not catch the Fan to Cool. It is the Belt. Make sure that it is Tight. You may have a Bad Belt Tensioner if it is not.
