My timing belt is ok. the engine still iout if timing

I replace my timing belt, all the marks are inplace, but when i drive it feels lazy and is my first time having a kia and i dont wanna sel it if is notting tath bad. please help.

Some of the sportages had a problem where the key holding the timing belt pulley on the crank would actually warp and move causing the lower pulley to be out of time. im not an expert on this as i haven't had this exact problem but check to see if the alignment pin on the crank pulley is top dead center when all the marks line up. if not u might need a new crank but i guess moving the lower pulley over a few teeth so it all lines up couldn't hurt

How to change the drive belt


One assumes the reference here is to the timing belt running hidden under a cover on the passenger side of the engine and NOT one of the external belts that drive the alternator, AC pump and power steering pump.

The timing belt requires precision installation. Its typically a full day task for an experienced mechanic with air tools. Precision installation first requires precision removal and preparation. To access the timing belt remove the passenger front wheel and the center sections only of the wheel well liner that expose view to side of engine. Then loosen tensioner bolts on external belts and remove external belts from the center main drive sheave. They can hang on the remote drive sheaves if desired. Remove upper and lower external covers from timing belt. Using old cloth, wipe the back-wall of the timing enclosure clean of dust and check for oil or coolant leaks. Find yellow chalk or Yellow lumber marking crayon. Look very carefully with bright light for timing marks on anything that rotates and for corresponding mark. At TDC of cylinder 1 all observable marks should simultaneously align. Cylinder 1 is on the rear engine bank closest to passenger seat. Rotate engine manually with battery disconnected and ignition off until alignment of all marks observed. Only then do you release the tensioner and remove the old timing belt. While the timing belt is removed is an excellent time to replace the cooling water pump. There is no timing mark on the water pump, only on the sheaves that drive the camshafts and on the main drive sheave. Also no timing marks on the idler pulleys.

Once the new belt is installed with everything verified in proper alignment and new water pump installed too, the idler pulleys can be set and spring loaded. Then manually rotate the engine through one complete cycle until all marks aligned again. Check torque on all bolts, then start reassembly of timing belt shield first, then external belts and adjust tensioners. Reinstall center wheel well liner sections and then reinstall the wheel and torque the lug nuts.

Reconnect the battery and start the vehicle. If all properly aligned it will immediately start. If anything improperly aligned, you now have BIG problem and likely permanent engine damage. Alignment of the timing belt rollers and sheaves absolutely critical, one omission and the engine is toast. Do it right and enjoy another 60K miles before you have to change the Kia timing belt yet again.

I replaced the timing belt on my 2002 Isuzu Axiom. The directions said to rotate the crankshaft 6 revolutions and re-check the timing marks. The marks on the pulleys and housing lined up just fine but the...


I am assuming the lines were either there from a factory replacement belt or maybe you put them there as per directions. Non the less the lines would line up eventually after x amount of revolutions but they don't have to after the six. Anyway, I always try to feel that I have distinct compression resistance while rotating the engine by hand. Hopefully you turned it by hand because if you have an interference engine you could do adverse damage if turning with the starter. If you can feel those compression cycles ( the engine should turn over hard at certain points) then you should be ok. Remember to check it multiple times to be sure, and check the belt tension also.

Blown timimng belt,how do i retime engine when replacing timing belt


Ok first thing is remove the #1 spark plug from engine, then turn your crank until you feel air push out that cylinder that means you are at TDC (top dead center). You will then set your cams to there settings ( I am not sure if this is a inline 4 or v6) so I can't tell you the marks. But the cams pulley will have marks that will align to marks on the head, The crank will have a mark on the pulley and on the block line these up as well. I like to set the top cam marks first then clamp the belt and pulley together with a small clamp to keep the tension. after that is all lined up install the tensioner and make sure you adjust the tensioner it will have two small pin holes that will need to be turned in order to tighten the tension. ( not to loose or belt can skip, not to tight or belt will wine.) Also if the belt snap while driving you probably bent the valves and will have to do a valve job which requires removing the head,

1994 honda civic, had a broken timing belt that was replaced by a mechanic and the car is not the same since then, it is very lazy struggling to drive since that time.


i'll bet the mechanic did not line the timing marks up correctly.....so cam and crank are not in sync.... i,ll almost guarantee it...

How do i time my Golf 1 correctly? it consumes a lot


its tricky enough if your not sure what your doing but ill run you through it. 1. remove top rocker cover and timing belt cover. 2 make up the position of the pully on the cam shaft at the top and the drive shaft at the bottom, this marks are you fail safe incase you cant time the engine. 3 remove the timing belt and pully tentioner, note if your going this far you are as well to replace the timing belt,tentioner and water pump. 4 On the cam shaft at the top if you force them to turn you will see a small indicator mark on the shaft this mark has to line up with the other indicator mark on the housing between the cam shaft and the cam shaft pully, once they line up your top end is timed, mark up the pully incase it moves. 5 on the drive shaft pully there is also markings that have to line up but you can also feel the position of the pully as you turn it, you will feel the piston been forced up and it is timed at top dead centre on cylinder one, which means the the piston has to be at the top just before the point of returning back down, using your feeling as a guide and the markings lined up you will have timing. also mark up this pully, your new marking should be very very close to the fail safe markings you put on at the start. when you have your marking replace the timing belt with the longest distance between pully contact going on first, try not disturb your timing or your hard work will have been for nothing, make sure the tentioner on the belt is tight but not to tight to the point where you ll stretch the belt or snap it, put everything back as you found it and crank the engine, job done, best of luck. hope this helps( rate me on my answer thanks )

Removal
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03 for the procedure.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove the generator drive belt, water pump and power steering pump drive belt, and the A/C compressor drive belt (if equipped). Refer to Section 03-05 for the removal procedure.
  1. If equipped, remove the three A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley bolts and the A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley.
  1. Remove the upper radiator hose bracket bolt.
  1. Loosen the two upper radiator hose clamps and remove the radiator hose bracket bolt. Remove the upper radiator hose (8260) and the upper radiator hose bracket from the vehicle.
  1. Remove the water bypass hose (8597) from between the thermostat housing and the water hose connection (8592) .
  1. Remove the main wiring harness from the upper engine front cover (6019) .
  1. Remove the eight upper engine front cover bolts and the upper engine front cover .
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  1. Remove the RH front wheel and tire assembly.
  1. Remove the four RH outer engine and transmission splash shield bolts and two screws and remove the RH outer engine and transmission splash shield (6775) .
  1. Use Strap Wrench 303-D055 (D85L-6000-A) or equivalent to hold the water pump pulley (8509) while removing the four water pump pulley bolts.
  1. Remove the water pump pulley from the water pump (8501) .
  1. Remove the crankshaft pulley (6312) . Refer to the procedure in this section.
  1. Remove the five lower engine front cover bolts and the lower engine front cover .
  2. Ensure that the timing marks between the crankshaft sprocket (6306) and the oil pump housing line up.
  3. NOTE: The directional arrow is necessary to ensure that the timing chain/belt (6268) can be reinstalled in the same direction.
  4. Loosen the timing chain/belt tensioner nut.
  5. Remove the timing chain/belt .

  6. Installation
    NOTE: Ensure that the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets (6256) and the seal plate are properly aligned. Ensure that the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump housing are still aligned. NOTE: A new timing chain/belt has three white timing marks that indicate the correct timing positions of the camshafts (6250) and the crankshaft (6303) . These marks will help ensure that the engine (6007) is timed properly. When the engine is properly timed each white timing mark on the timing chain/belt will be aligned with the corresponding camshaft and crankshaft timing mark on the sprocket. Because the white timing marks are not evenly spaced you will need to refer to the following illustration for proper timing chain/belt placement. There should be 40 timing belt teeth between the timing marks of the front and rear camshaft sprockets and 43 teeth between the timing mark on the front camshaft sprocket and the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket .

    NOTE: Verify that the camshaft timing marks are aligned with the timing marks on the seal plate, and that the crankshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with the timing mark on the oil pump (6600) .

    Install the timing chain/belt starting at the crankshaft sprocket and moving around to the camshaft sprocket following a counterclockwise path. Do not allow any slack in the timing chain/belt between the timing sprockets. After all of the timing marks are matched up with the timing chain/belt installed, slip the timing chain/belt onto the timing chain/belt tensioner .

TIMING MARKS ON A 97 VOLVO 960


I have seen timing belt overhaul kits. They may be worth looking at.
You can check at the library for Hayes or Chilton's repair manuals and the www.Autozone.com do it yourself instruction website.

If you need to remove the crankshaft pulley nut with rope method, you can determine the TDC of a cylinder by tracing the sparkplug cable back to the distributor cap and looking at the rotor position. It should be in the firing position
Here's some info in found if you want to remove the water pump as well, or you can ignore that.
From my research the idler bearing probably should be changed. If it goes the belt will slip and destroy the engine.

The real work is getting to the belt, not replacing it
.
When you get one set of marks (camshaft or crankshaft) to line up then look at the other set. It is right since the engine is working. Probably the crankshaft gear will have 2 teeth with lines cut in them, one line in the valley or a chip on a tooth. You can mark the unit also. Remember do not rotate the camshaft/crankshaft with the belt off. Keep them aligned with the marks.

Remove the serpentine belt using a 3/8" drive breaker bar or ratchet to release the tensioner.



Remove front timing belt cover
Remove splash guard under engine
Remove vibration damper guard
Remove ignition coil cover from top of engine

Note: the belt can be replaced without removal of the splash guard. The vibration damper guard can be removed from the top. It is held on by two 10mm bolts. One is toward the driver's side (about 4 o'clock if looking at damper) and the other one is toward the bottom (about 6 o'clock). You'll have to feel around for them, but you can get them with a ratcheting wrench. If you cannot feel them, they are visible from below with the splash pan removed



Turn the engine clockwise until the timing marks align as shown on the upper cover.
Remove upper timing cover


Removing timing belt:
Remove tensioner upper mounting bolt.
Undo lower mounting bolt.
Twist tensioner to free plunger.
Remove bolt.
Remove tensioner.

Note: If the timing belt hasn't been replaced, it is a good idea to replace it at this time. If the tensioner is leaking fluid, replacement is necessary. Even if you are not replacing it, it must be removed to compress the plunger for installation of the belt when finished. Be sure to make note of which side of the tensioner unit faces out.

Do NOT rotate the camshafts or crankshaft with timing belt removed. Engine damage will occur!

Spin the tensioner and idler pulleys. Replace if excessive bearing noise or grinding is heard.
Remove belt.




Install timing belt:
Place belt around crankshaft pulley and right-hand idler.
Place belt over camshaft pulleys.
Position belt around water pump and press over tensioner pulley.

If reusing the old tensioner, you must compress the plunger again. Make sure the hole in the plunger lines up with the hole in the body of the tensioner and place in a vice with the side that faces out pointing up. SLOWLY compress the plunger using the vice, stopping frequently to allow the hydraulic fluid to move. Once the hole in the plunger is even with the hole in the body, insert a nail, pick or similar through to hold the plunger in place. Make sure it is long enough to be grabbed and removed once tensioner is installed.

Install the tensioner, torquing mounting bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
Remove locking pin/nail/pick
Install upper timing cover and make sure timing marks still line up. Wait 5 minutes for tensioner to fully extend.
Rotate the engine by hand clockwise two full revolutions, making sure marks line up each time.
Reinstall covers and serpentine belt as shown:



Also, there is a mark on the crankshaft gear that should line up with a mark on the engine when the timing marks line up. I do not have a picture of it, but you should see what 'm talking about..

Actually replacing the water pump is quite simple. First, drain the coolant:


When the belt is off, remove the 7 bolts that hold the pump to the engine. Clean the gasket mating surface and install the new pump. Then continue with installing the timing belt.

if its auto it sounds like the transmisson is sllipping no quick fix
if its manual the clucth is slipping try adjusting if there is no adjustment then clutch needs replacing

Timing belt


Why do you think the timing belt is an issue, you would be better to give me the symptom rather the question you posed, you can check the timing belt by pulling of the belt cover and putting the crankshaft pulley to the TDC mark and then checking the index mark on the cam pulley(s), the pulley mark should line up with the index mark on the engine, if not the belt has jumped, in this case it must be replaced, if you do replace the belt make sure all the pulleys and the belt tensioners bearings are not rough feeling or have play in them.
