On rare occasions, the neutral safety switch can fail, or the clutch switch if this is a stick. It could also be a broken wire at the starter. But more likely the starter, especially if there is a lot of miles on the vehicle. There is a two-person check you can do with the starter. You will need to locate the starter, then one person holds the key in the "start" position while the other raps the starter from below with a heavy object like a hammer. Most often the starter will respond to this therapy in just a few strokes. If so, replace the starter, the brushes and commutators are badly worn.

If you find my suggestions to be helpful, please share with us some details so that others may benefit from knowing the whole story. Thank you!

The starter is a very possible problem. also i would check the starter relay first by swapping it with an identical relay before spending $100+ on a starter.

Sometimes the car won't start and the dash lights and the radio lights flicker

Best place to start is the positive lead on the battery . Remove the lead and clean battery pole and terminal using sand paper until you have shiny syrfaces. Replace the lead and tighten the terminal . Check the battery for charge condition as what you describe indicates a flat battery

2001 Chev Malibu. Turn key on to start car, won't start. No warning lights on no lights on gauge panel. Radio works, dome light work.

check the ground leg to your engine.. it runs off the neg. battery terminal. will connect to frame and engine.. pull it off, wire brush it put it back.. you radio will work, 'cause it draws much less current, and is grounded in dash.

1992 Mazda mpv . Won't hold charge . Engine won't

The first thing to do is have the battery tested, just because you charged it doesn't mean it will stay charged if the cells are sulfated up or shorted.

Engine won't turn over

This is most likely the battery, sometimes you can have enough power for dome lights and radio, but not enough "Cranking Amps" to start the vehicle. Charge it, or take it to an Auto zone or something. They will charge it and test it for free.

2001 aurora won't start at all. Hook batery up horn horn sounds and doesn't stop head lights stay on but nothing happens when the key is inthe ingition. No clicking or anything at all. alarm on...

The security system does not disable the starter, it only disables fuel to the engine. In the fuse block under the hood, locate the STARTER relay. Place your hand on this relay and see if it clicks while someone else turns the key to start...if the relay is ok then the starter itself is faulty. Good luck, i hope this helps.
