Transmission problems I have a 1998 grand cherokee laredo and sometimes it shifts and sometimes it done. It has an automatic transmission. It seems when it gets hot it shifts but when its cold it wont. Is it a speed sensor?

it sounds like your transmission is beginning to fail. this is common on chrysler products. at least it seems that the problem can be caught before a complete failure, that should ease the strain on the pocket book. my suggestion is take it to your local transmission shop and have them put a scan tool on it. there are many places who will check it out for free, so be sure to ask around.

Could be a vacuum issue or the modulator..

The modulator tells it when to shift and is controlled by vacuum presure..
Check all vacuum lines that rum from the tranie for cracks, spits etc..

it could also be a sensor..

Hope this helps !!
Please rate me good ;o)

In automatic transmissions the second to third syncronizers always seem to go bad first, the syncronizers are worn, bad or gone. This is common in these transmissions. Also you might check your trans fluid level, sometimes a low level will cause the transmission not to shift correctly.

shifting is regulated by the valve body, governor and shift control module and solenoids...The bubbles bother me...Is it overfull ? If not, the filter or valve body may be loose and allowing air into the system and bleeding off pressure...however, this should make the unit slip.
Before it develops into something serious have a reputable shop check it out!!! (there are no "user friendly" items inside except the throttle cable, filter and checking valve body to make sure it's not loose (only saw that once on a recent rebuild though)

get a filter and fluid change in the transmission.
that 5 speed automatic is tricky.

do a code scan and see if there is a vacuum leak telling it to shift too late
