Question about Cars & Trucks
Car starts for a second or two then stops. I thought it might be the fuel pump, but I can hear the pump make a noise when I turn the ignition on.
Check pressure at motor with a gauge
The pump may come on but be worn out
& binds up or pressure regulator is bad
Check if your loosing injector pulse or spark also

SOURCE: '87 Iroc fuel port injection.
The pump is in the tank. Empty the tank, disconnect the filler and vent tubes, and remove the straps that hold it under the car. Take the strap bolts off the rear end and the front should just slide out. Have a jack ready to help lower and roll out of the way.

Have you changed the fuel filter? Did it die while driving, or just wouldn't start? Don't use starting fluid on a gas engine! It will cause a lot more problems than it solves. Ether, starting fluid is made for diesel engines... not gas, not ever. If it won't start, it isn't lacking ether. It's lacking gas, air or spark.

The fuel pump is in the fuel tank.Sit in the car.....turn on the ignition switch to run.....listen very closely to the rear of the car...or have someone kneel down by the back wheel.....you should hear a "prime cycle"......the pump running for 2 or 3 seconds if the key was off for 15 seconds before trying this.If you hear silence you most likely need a fuel pump. Before pulling the tank down....check for power on the gray wire at the fuel tank connector just ahead of the rear axle under the car.Check for power with a test light that will last for 2 to 3 seconds as you turn on the key to run.Power means you really most likely need a pump.No power means you may need a fuse or a fuel pump relay.
