Replace Oil Pan on 1996 Volvo 850GL

I am having problem pulling the oil pan out of the way from the engine. The oil pan seem to be getting stuck somewhere. What other things I need to remove besides 24 bolts on the pan. Please help with what ever knowledge you have about this problem. I already purchased a clean used pan to replace the craked one.
Thank you very much.

Thank you very much for your prompt response. It really helps to know this. Obviously, there is lot more work than I expected. Hopefully, jacking up the engine will free-up the pan.

    Thanks again.

Your motor mounts may inhibit jacking the engine far enough up to clear the oil pump so it may be necessary to loosen one or more. This is not a critical point so retightening them shouldn't cause any problems.

I think your problem may be the oil pump pick up, which is at the bottom of the pan, and it draws the oil up out of the pan to flow thru and lubricate the engine. You will need to drop the pan straight down to clear this, and this usually means jacking up the engine quite a bit (the height of the pan) to provide clearance.

Jack up truck for safety sake put jack stands under frame . remove all engine oil remove all bolts holding oil pan on if their is not enough room to drop pan you may have to remove bolts holding motor mounts and jack up engine. if front end linkage is still in the way remove linkage. pull oil pan out. check gasket that was between block and oil pan if any stuck to block of engine remove with gasket scraper or wire brush or wire wheel on drill.make sure mating surface is clean put new gasket on new oil pan I like to use a high temp sealer on gasket both sides. Put pan with gasket back in place of old oil pan and tighten all bolts. jack engine down ,replace moter mount bolts replace any linkage you took apart. and dont forget to replace engine oil. make sure oil plug is in pan before pouring oil in . before starting engine check that no oil is leaking than start engine and check for any leaks again if all is good your done. if this was helpful please leave good feed back. A good temp fix on a rusted oil pan is JB weld make sure no oil is on pan clean with towel and rubbing alchol .you may have to drain oil first. if it is rusted badly you may have to use a wire brush on a drill to clean the area to patch. if patched properly it may last for years.

After removing nuts and bolts, why isn't the oil pan dropping?

Oil pans have a gasket around them to prevent oil from leaking. Over time, this gasket may have gotten stuck between the oil pan and the engine block like glue due to heat and pressure. It should just take some gentle "Persuasion" to get the oil pan to come off. Use a flat bladed screwdriver and gently pry at it, going around the oil pan and being careful not to bend the oil pan. It should come right off in no time!

I have an 1995 Volvo 850 and believe there is engine oil leaking between the engine and transmission. What would be my best course of action

It sounds like the rear oil seal on the oil base pan is leaking......You have to remove the base pan and replace the front and rear oil seal. They just sit in the grouve of the oil pan.You can also try retorqueing the bolts first to see if they came loose over time. Hope this helps.

How to change oil pan

if the owner is the one going to change the oil pan , then the owner should locate the oil pan .Prepare the the equipment going to be used in changing the oil pan. First drain the oil or the engine oil that is in the oil pan. In draining, the owner of the car should twist the drain plug until it loose that the oil will spill on a can or to where the owner will place the engine oil.The oil pan is connected to the engine with the bolts . The owner have to twist the bolts until the oil pan is being place out of the engine . then replace the oil pan .Then the owner have to place back the bolt using the bolts to connect the oil pan to the engine twist the bolts again until the new oil pan is connected to the engine.Close or twist the drain plug until engine oil will not spill , Then refill or place engine oil to the engine. If the owner cannot do it then the owner have to go to a car mechanic to do the task or the job.

Oil Pump is in the oil pan.. You would have to take the pan out. To get the pan out you either have to raise the motor up or remove crossmembers.
