Blown head gasket on 97 ford taurus

I have a 97 Ford Taurus with a 3.0L 24-valve DOHC engine. The headgasket blew in July but I havent had the time nor money to get it fixed. My question is should I just have the headgasket repaired or get a whole new engine, seeing how they are relatively close in price? Some mechanics have told me that a headgasket repair is a ***** to do on the DOHC which is why the labor is so much as well as with it sitting for so long all the pipes and stuff in the engine might be rusted out and recommend to go the safer way with a newer engine. Whereas, others have said that there is no need for a new engine because if the headgasket is blown and it has warped the cylinder head they can just replace the cylinder head. I plan on keeping this car for a few more years as well as use it alot for work, I do alot of driving for work so I need a reliable car. Which is better? And what should the price range be on the engine? Thanks

I've been an auto technician for 30 years and I recommend just doing the head gaskets. Both, you'll be 90% down by the time you get one off. just make sure you send the heads off to have them checked for cracks and have them surfaced. Cheap insurance after all the work. good luck and make darn sure they are torqued down correctly.

Remove cyl. head and take it to an automotive machine shop for pressure testing and resurfacing. Cosy is less and it will be right

A used engine that may have less mile than yours will cost anyway from $500.00-1,000.00 plus and additional 500-850 more labor to install engine. Here is amy advise if your engine is in good condition I would definitely do the head-gasket job on it. That should come out to be less money and you know what your getting. More than likely you would only need a head gasket job and have head cleaned and polished and would NOT need to replace actual heads. Good luck and Thanks for using FIX YA

I would go for the engine and if you go to the right auto salvage where they guarantee them you should be able to get one between 450 to 800 depending on who you go to.

Location of thermostat 1997 ford taurus dohc 24 valve v6

on the 1997 Taurus DOHC v6 the thermostat is conveniently located at the front passenger side of the engine, just up over top of the the mud guard. There's about a dozen screws (bolt heads) to take off, slip out the mud guard and there's the lower radiator hose and the thermostat housing! The thermostat is held in by a reusable O ring and is pretty well engineered for being in such a surprising location.

Try the idle air control valve since it raises the idle when you turn on a load to the engine.

The two have nothing to do with each other. You just get a starter for a 99 Taurus with a 3 litre engine.

Ford Taurus 1996, coolant comes out throughout the cap every time when car stops

You will overheat the engine if losing coolant.Firstly replace the cap with a new one,Is the engine temperature normal when you stop ? If its over temperature it will still blow out coolant. Check the radiator for blockage of the tubes & ensure the fan belts and water pump are in good order. Worst case is a blown head gasket can test for combustion gases in the coolant

Auto Zone has that information on line here. You didn't say what size engine you have or whether it is OHV or DOHC, but according to their numbers, almost 90% of 97 Taurus are 3.0L OHV.
