hi I dont have a vw , but I do have a shogun and I had the same problum, it turned out to be the seals on my fule injector pump and at a cost of £325.00 to have done.

To check the vacum pump.all you have to do is remove the pipe from the servo,and with the engine running that pipe should be sucking.place finger over the pipe and check.If its not sucking then check the pipe for cracks.If the pipe is ok then replace the pump

One of the retainer clips is probably broken and letting the line vibrate. Install new retainer clips and that should stop the snapping. This also happens a lot on Mercedes Benz diesels too.
