i had the same issue with my cavalier 1998. the speed sensor wiring was chafed. fixed the wires and all is ok..hope this helps.

the transmition is electronic and needs to know some info on how the engine is running
it gets this info from a number of sensorm
rpm, air temp, coolant temp, throttle position.
those inputs need to be checked

The dipstick on late model GM products is sealed with a Big Red Cap. It is near the firewall in the middle of the car. There are many reasons why the transmission will not shift into drive but the most common is the fluid filter inside the transmission. The owners manual says the fluid is supposed to be changed several times during the life of the car. If it were mine I would get it to a transmission shop soon.

Just read where this can happen due to a computer error. Unhook your battery and this will clear the error. Try driving it and see if that was it.
