Sounds like the belt let go and maybe got jammed on the way out. The belt power the alternator, power steering pump and water pump etc. Check for a seized pulley as well. Sometimes the little bearings go.

SOURCE: Electrical Issues for a 1997 Subaru Outback

Its me again, You might want to have someone check the grounds for the electrical system from motor to body and body to frame. This will cause a similar broblem with the charging system to not allow it to function properly. On the brake issue I am still trying to figure the relationship to what started your problem but to no avail. Do you have the height adjusted air suspension? If so there is a procedure for bleeding the power steering system that has to be done which is lengthy to type. I will do it if this is the case and you do not have a repair manual.

Battery and break indicator showed up and power steering went out all at the same time

Are you sure the drive belt is still on the engine ?
The battery light usually comes on when the alternator is not charging the battery, and the power steering is also belt driven.
The brake warning light can come on when the brake fluid is low, but also when the battery light comes on.

Last night, I was driving and smelled something hot and then the battery light came on and the power part of steering and brakes went away. It is very cold here. The lights are still working. Could it be...

Check to see if the belt [ s] are still on the motor. You may have had something seize and break the belt that powers these items. There is also a seperate belt that powers the A/C [ lower right side of engine ].

Car suddenly stopped working

Check the earth lead on the battery and make sure all the battery connections have good contact. the Earth lead of the battery must be a good contact to the car body.

This I would say is the most likely cause. earth wires run to the gearbox aswell. if you lose power then yopu wont get any power steering or brakes etc anyhow.
