SOURCE: i have a 1990 gmc truck not 4x4 it is a 2 wheel

with the front wheels of the ground remove the outer tie rods from the knuckles. Turn the knuckles by hand. Do they move freely? if not than the upper or lower ball joint are binding.

With the tie rod end still disconnected turn the steering wheel to the left. Does it still bind up? If so you probably have a bad steering gear box.

Steering

Need to replace a worn out steering rack
& flush the Power Steering System
Have to install a Return Line Filter after
the cooler or you have no warranty on new rack
If you change power steering & transmission fluids on all vehicles every 3 years, you avoid expensive repairs, but yours
is 18,19 years old, so you got an ongoing restoration project,
not a daily driver

Clunking noise when you turn the steering wheel while driving

The noise will be either the universal joint on the steering column or a component in the steering rack or outer tie rod ends, get someone to sit in the car and move the wheel slightly left and right and have a look and you will be able to see and hear where the noise is coming from

How do i align a steering wheel on a 2002 astro van

If the steering wheel hasn't been removed and is just off center then the front end may need alignment to correctly get the steering wheel at center.

I feel a slight thud in the steering and hear a light thud when I turn a corner; seems to happen most when the car has just started driving; is this an issue of power steering fluids, something in the rack...

This is most likely the steering knuckle or tie rod end that needs grease or most likley replacement. If your hear clunk when turning, then it is proabably the tie rod ends. If clunks while driving, then it may be the balljoints.

I get a squeaking noise when i turn the steering wheel right or left. replaced struts, and stablizer link rod on 2001 ford escape

I have a 2002 Escape V6. I had a squeak when turning... even when standing still. It was fairly low mileage: 40,000 miles?
It was the outer tie rod. You could feel it squeak in your hand while someone else turned the steering wheel.
I disconnected the tie rod. I wasn't worn, just squeaky. I squirted a little WD40 inside the boot, and worked it in. Reassembled and squeak gone.
I bought a replacement tie rod, but never had to put it on. I'm now at 110,000 miles.

Steering seems to be binding

sound like it has a control valve seal problem internally in the steering box, assured that the linkage is good, this can be dangerous due to loss,or forced steering at any time...focus on replacing the box......GL....be safe

Popping noise

Inner tie rods could make the same noise your describing. Do this......with your car in park and at idle, slightly turn you wheel from left to right, just a slight ****. 1/16 of a turn. Increase the pace from left to right, then slow down the pace. You should feel a bump in the steering wheel almost like something is tapping it. If so, have your inner and outer tie rods checked. Actually, have the steering gear checked also for leaks and wear.
