2001 grand marquis, have to slam the gear shift lever into park to turn the car over

When starting the car I have to place my gear shift lever into D1 and slam it into park to turn the car over. Then it does not always stay in park, it seems to get stuck in neutral. I was told that I could tighten the cable, but don't know how. Have little money to take it into the shop. Please help.

Price the repair. Ford does have some Credit programs for car repairs and you might be surprised about the terms. Their own Credit card can be used for oil changes and tires as well as brakes and so forth.

Your problem is not only with starting but can result in the car lurching or rolling if not properly repaired.

SOURCE: car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

SOURCE: My PRNDL don't work, loose shift indicator won't go into gear. Plenty of transmission fluid, no obvious wear or breakage, what do I do now?

When you turn the key to the ON position are there any instrument lights on the dash? Does the radio work? If not, dead battery.

2000 grand marquis key wont turn and stuck in reverse or park. Steering wheel stck

Hi,

there might be something wrong with your transmission or transmission fluid. And you might need to check your solenoids prior to checking your shift lever for problems as well. I would also suggest using a free diagnostic from a store like autozone.

Thank you.

My 1991 Grand Marquis will NOT go into park, it keeps rolling what can I do?

Could be a problem with the key lock cylinder.
You could disconnect the shift cable and try shifting the lever on the transmission. That would tell you if it is a shift lever problem or something inside the trans.

WHY CAN'T I SHIFT MY 1997 GRAND MARQUIS OUT OF PARK AND INTO ANY GEAR?

You may have a faulty Break-light switch. If the switch is bad, then it will behave as if you have no breaks afa the shift-lever is concerned.

Check under the dash at your Brake pedal interlock switch. It is timed with the gearshift Interlock and Ignition switch. This switch usually gets hit by feet and dislodged or broken. When you shift out of Park, the switch is toggling to a broken piece and shorting out.

The brake interlock switch is at the top half of the pedal lever. The other part of the Interlock uses a rod or cable in the steering column Ignition switch and mates with the shifting mechanism.

Problem shifting gears with column, park is reverse, 2 became drive?? 1996 mercury marquis with 197,000 miles. Will not start when I finally put it in park (had to really slide it hard to park) and then...

Very likely you have a loose connection on your transmission shift linkage, or you have a shift cable that is no longer tight.

First jack up the vehicle and secure with a jack stand. Check the connection on the drivers side of the transmission to make sure it is connected tight. There should be a nut holding the shift lever in place. If it is correctly fastened, remove the steering column plastic covers by unscrewing screws and check for loose connections.

Impala doesn't go into park

I suspect that there is a simple fix.
Under the car.... at the point where the shift lever rod connects to the transmission shift lever(s)...... loosen the nut on the Park transmission shift lever... and place the lever all the way into the park position.... You can confirm by attempting to start the car....
Once you are sure that it is in "Park", you can tighten the shift lever nut....
