2003 olds alero has slack in steering replaced tie rod ends did not help

I have seen racks come loose on aleros and grand am's. Did you replace the inner tie rod ends, they may also be worn, you also have a small U joint on your steering shaft. I hope this all helps.

Oil all over the undercarraige... looks like a starter next to where the oil's coming from. It's a 2003 Alero front wheel drive, 4 cylinder. Is the main seal as close the the starter as it looks?

I don't think it is the main seal, it sounds more like the power steering pump. Are any of the reservoirs up top empty? Coolant? Brake fluid? Rocker cover gasket leaking>? Did you check the oil? Check this stuff out, and sorry to have to show you the web site. But , you would not believe the complaints. Hope this helps.
