I Would first suspect that your Oil pressure sending unit is bad. This would be by far more common than actual lack of oil pressure. When you first noticed the problem did the engine make any unusual noise, If not I would start by changing the oil, oil filter and checking the oil pressure sending unit. Also note as to whether all of your other gages are working if not you may just have a bad fuse. If you did actually lose oil pressure at minimum you are looking at removing the oil pan and replacing the oil pump. It could be that the pickup tube on the oil pump has come off. The oil pressure sending Unit is cylindrical and should be threaded into the engine should have two wires going to it if you can not locate it buy the part first so as to have reference as to what it looks like. Make shor you buy it from a store with a good return police so that if you find it not to be the problem you can take it back.

Hello
It sounds like if there has not ben a oil change for a while then you might have a plugged up oil screen on the oil pick up tube, You might luck out and just have a bad oil sender,

Check engine light is on. Engine sounds like it's knocking. And oil light is coming on. This 2008 Dodge Dakota has only 63,000 miles.

Sometimes that light means overfill oil
Sometimes after changing oil if they put too much that happens
Check the oil level on cold in level place (give it like an hour or so) for the light to reset
If after that the light still on take it to a tech.

Good luck

No oil pressure

Does the motor sound different? Have you changed oil to see if it helps? If it sounds ok and you have change the oil and filter Id replace the Oil Sending unit (Oil Pressure switch). These are known to go bad.

Less than 1000 miles on new motor ,new oil pump, pressure drops for no apparent reason.have done 2 oil & filter changes,so sludge is ruled out. im thinking oil sending unit

Yes, faulty sending unit or gauge itself could be the problem. The oil sump pickup could also be loose...causing a temporary loss of oil psi when you corner and brake.
With oil pressure you don't want to take chances....i would connect a manual gauge and monitor, just to be safe...it could save your new engine from bearing failure.

Oil pressure drops and check engine ligth comes on for awhile then returns to normal. this has happend a few time and allway the same.oil is full and new .could this be the sending unit ? this is a 98...

I assume there are no oil leaks on the motor that could be contributing to loss of oil pressure.

I would have the engine oil pressure checked by a mechanic with an independent oil pressure gauge to see what might be going on. I would want to do this on a cold engine and also after the motor has been operating for a while and the oil is quite hot.
( I would also immediately be replacing the oil filter in case there is some blockage problem there. I very much doubt it but I would be doing that anyway just to be sure as it is simple and cheap to do. You say the oil level in the motor is correct and that it has been recently changed).

If there was a problem with the oil pressure sender unit I suspect you would have more frequent symptoms than you have indicated.

If the oil pump was faulty I believe you should also be getting more frequent symptoms.

It could be that the oil pressure relief valve is intermittently temporarily sticking in the open position and the pressure then being generated by the oil pump is insufficient to reach the minimum level. The warning light then illuminates.

sounds like you have failed rod or crank bearing, this is causing the loss of oil pressure.

I have a dodge 2001 Dakota 3.9 and it does not get good gas mileage. i think it needs a tune up, i check the motor in the dark and notice a little spark from a spark plug wire.

i recommend to replace the spark plugs and the spark plug wires (it is always recommended to replace both at the same time) it is also a good idea to replace the air filter and fuel filter if this hasnt been done long time or if you do a lot of driving and you have done it in a while i still recommend to do so and it is a good idea at this time of the year to change the oil if it hasnt been done w/i the last 3 months or 3,000 miles which ever is first. this will fix that spark problem and improve gas mileage.
