Question about 1985 Buick Skyhawk

1 Answer

My 1985 Skyhawk won't start. Cranks well but no start

Fuel is coming to carb. Recently changed fuel filter. Checked fuel pump, works fine. Spark to plug and distributor is yellow not blue. Can that be the issue. New spark plugs, wire, distributor cap and rotor. Was running fine until recently when it began to run very sluggishly and cutting off randomly. Now just won't start!! HELP!!

How do you test the module

TEST PROCEDURES OHMS (NO POWER) AND VOLTAGE WILL BE AVAILABLE IN SERVICE MANUAL. YOU SHOULD BUY ONE IF YOU PLAN TO KEEP THE VEHICLE, BUT YOU CAN GO TO AUTOZONE, UNWRAP A MANUAL (CELLOPHANE) AND READ TESTING PRCEEDURES. ALSO I BELIEVE AOTOZONE CAN TEAT THE MODULE FOT YOU IF YOU REMOVE IT AND TAKE IT IN. REGARDLESS, IF IT IS THE MODULE, YOU MUST COAT CONTACT POINTS WITH THE SPECIAL DI-ELECTRIC GREASE THAT COMES WITH IT, OR IT WILL IMMEDIATELY BURN UP AGAIN!

SOURCE: car starts and stalls

The chance of the Power Train Control Module (PCM) failing is very small, about 3% per industry research, so expert ndguy2481 is giving bad advice, it is more likely the crankshaft position sensor or the ignition module have a problem when they warm up. Run a test on the PCM to retrieve the trouble codes, I know there will be some. The connector to do this test is under the dash below the steering wheel under the dash panel.

SOURCE: ok i recently changed spark

Did you mean coil the 1994 3.1 did not use a distributor , sounds like a bad coil pack and cylinders #3 and #6 do use the same coil. I would also check 3 and 6 plug wires this system is a waste spark design meaning when # 3 coil fires it is supposed to go through #3 plug wire , through #3 plug ( ground) through the engine block through the #6 plug then through the #6 wire then back to the coil, Then when #6 fires it works the opposite way, so in theory you could have one bad wire affecting 2 cylinders .....

2002 Chevy Blazer with starting problem. It will start sometimes but mostly not. Runs great when it does start. Starter cranks fine. Has new fuel filter and gas lines.

You need 3 things for your vehicle to start and run.. Fuel, spark and air. If you've recently replaced the fuel filter I'd have the fuel pumps electrical connections checked out. It could possibly be on its way out. Also check all spark plugs, wires and coil pack to make sure nothing is damaged on the "spark system". Then of course make sure the filter is clean and that all of your sensors monitoring the air flow into the throttle body are connected. From personal experience though, I'd say it sound like the fuel pump isn't always doing what it should upon initial start up and that's where I'd direct my attention.

1995 ford contour cranks but won't start, change fuel filter, fuel pump, and spark plugs. Not getting any spark.

Have you ever heard of testing before replacing parts ? Fuel pressure an flow tesing , testing the electrical circuit for the fuel pump , amp draw testing , voltage drop testing etc... Thier are no magical fixes in auto repair . No spark ! check B+ voltage an ground circuits for the ignition system , Ignition System Designs Operation and Testing an SD Premium video

Have a 2001 jaguar vanden plas. It won't start. It cranks fine battery is good but it won't turn over. I have been told could be fuel filter and or fuel pump. If you agree how do i change

To confirm that is is the fuel pump at issue here get a can of spray starting fluid and next time it won't fire up spray it into the air intake hose of the engine while someone cranks the engine over, if it lights right off then the pump may be the problem. A clogged fuel filter may cause loss of power but seldom if ever a no start.

2002 saturn sl won't start, turn over but won't start

If the engine fires up for a second or two with starting fluid then the fuel pump is weak.I would check the fuel pressure and if its not within the specs then replace the pump and filter.

MY 1985 FIERO GT V6 CRANKS BUT WILL NOT START. IT SAT WITHOUT BEING RUN FOR 2 YEARS. IT STARTED UP FOR ABOUT WEEKS AND NOW WHEN I TURN THE KEY ON IT JUST CRANKS BUT WON'T START . HAD FUEL PRESSURE...

More than likely since the car sat for so long with fuel in it that it separated. There is water in fuel and when it sits for an extended amount of time it will rust in side the tank and get into your fuel lines and even your fuel pump. First thing you could do is by some fuel treatment and run it through. it should hopefully break up anything inside there that could be impeding the fuel from getting into the carb.
Also check the leads inside the distributor. when a car sits for that long the seals can dry out and allow moisture in, corroding them and not allowing a spark to enter the cylinder and ignite the fuel.
Just remember that a car needs only three things to run 1. Spark 2. Fuel 3. Air
If you have all of those then the car will should start. Hope this helps. Good luck.

1985 corvette cranks but won't start, fuel pressure good, oil is good also, it doesn't seem to be geeting any fuel. New fuel pump, filter & gas. Is there a security aystem problem?

Check to see if you have spark, if you do, and still it does not start, then you may think that fuel is not getting to it. At this point, use some starting fluid and spray it at the throttle opening. That should start it for a few seconds and give you the answer.
