xj220 jagcar, Thanks for the info. All of my acuators seem to be working, the one on the front diff works to, the pin goes into the diff bu8t it's like it does not grab. I'm thinking it's something in the front diff. When nyou had your problem were your acuators working at all?

If acuator is tuning the rod that goes into the front diff, could something be broken inside?

Ok took it toa guys shop I know. Drained the front differenial and replace fluids. Old fluid looked like it had water in it, must have been freezing up. Works fine now. Thanks for everybody's information.

Sometimes it will engage sometimes it won't. I've got the manual engagement type not the pushbutton. It's a

pain I live in NW PA.

I had the same problem... even though i have an 04 heritage edition 4x4, manual shift lever, this should help you out... on the transfer case, there should be a plug just beside the forward drive shaft... even though mine is a manual shift, that plug lets the computer know that you are in 4wd... you also have a vacuum locking forward differential, the plug i referred to tells the computer to activate the vacuum system which engages the forward diff... i'm going to take my best guess that either the plug assembly on your transfer case might be bad, OR, you might have a bad vacuum module on your forward diff - even possibly a vacuum leak in the air lines coming from that assembly up to the firewall on the passenger side... just take a peak and see what you think, both the plug and vacuum assembly are easy fixes... (by the way, the vacuum module is a cylindrical unit that has an arm coming out of it that enters the diff... the module should be mounted directly onto your forward diff.)

i'm assuming you meant turning the rod... but considering that the rod should just move up and down and not turn, it's possible that the shaft could have snapped inside or it is missed aligned inside... i would pull the front diff plate off and take a peak to see if there are any loose parts or pieces of metal floatin around in the fluid...

lot of time 4X4 will engage only in neutral and disengage in neutral. some times switching from drive to neutral and revers will help to disengage. just sake back and for till you feel the 4X4 is off.
Good luck

Have you had codes checked ? While connected to a good scanner that will check transfer case switch to show if switch is working, and it could be the switch on the side of the transmission.

My 2002 2500HD 4x4 front axle not engaging

Try jacking up one side of the front and putting it on a jackstand. Then turn key on(but dont start it) and put it in 4hi. Try to spin the tire in the air. The drive shaft should not turn nor the wheel. If the wheel does then maybe the acuator is not moving in the axle. It worked when you pulled it out but it might be hanging up on something in the axle.

First check the connection at the switch. I have found alot of the time the switch has been the prob. 2nd,the selinoid[electric] at the transfer case may need to be taken apart and cleaned if it has not been used for a while...hope this helps.

your transfer case is not working properly, try this trick, shift into 4wd and gently back up the car and go forward and back up again wait for the indicator light to come back again, goodluck, otherwise you need to have those transfer case checked and maintained, have those front hubs checked and maintained too. Its would be better to use your 4WD more often. Try this trick not on a paved road pls.

Tranfer case does not shift into 4HI from 2WD

try resetting the 4X4 module first. Remove the courtesy lamp and ATC fuses for at least 1 minute the reinstall fuses. Cycle key on and off 5 times then try your four wheel. Please rate if this works.
