Question about Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

Son's 99 Grand Am Gt has been giving starting problems.  Starts, then dies.  May or may not start again.  Tune up earlier this summer, plugs wires, etc.  Changed fuel filter. could it be the fuel pump/low pressure, or is there a fuel pressure regulator/sensor that may be bad?

HEY!! I had same problem and i didnt know i solved it til i put in a brand new battery! I think the battery was getting old, and the extra amps told the 'computer' that the car wasnt running and it just died at start up sometimes. the new battery must have kept the computer from 'glitching off' when we started it. and all is great now!

Noise under hood sounds like phone ringing

The ringing noise could the heat shield to the spark plugs. As for the other problem, it sounds like it's time for a summer tune up. Spark plug and  wire, air and fuel filter. Good luck and and don't for get the oil change too.

INTERMITTENT !! No power to instruments or starter

I had this problem with 99 Durango and went to AutoBeef.com and learned that this problem notorious for 98 & 99 Durango. After reading all the entries I was encouraged to replace the PCM "Brain". The site also listed the name of an online company that sells brains for <300.00. It was so easy to fix -- I had my brother and son help me to remove 3 screws and replace the brain. The guys from the online company that sells computer brains told me how to do it (Florida Based company -- can't remember the name but you can google)

Starts then dies

Have you changed the spark plugs lately? There are three things that make the car go... fire (Spark) fuel and compression. Does it do this on moist mornings or always? Or it could be Losse or Damaged wiring in the ingition system. Or Intake manifold leaks. Make sure all monting nuts and bolts are tight and vacuum hoses are attatched right and in good condition. Hope this helps.
