Engine light stays on

Engine ligt staying on was intermitent at times checked gas cap it was tight runs rough at idle sometimes when runing rough exhaust smells like rotten eggs

That is sulfur smell.

Sulfur smell it is not necessarily indication of problems if not accompained by an eccessive fuel consumption.

In conjunction with "kinder" nine out of ten time in my experience it usually is the oxygen sensor(s) which would be about right with the year model and number of miles.

Check the spark plug.spark plug dead or it fell off
Borrow, rent or buy an automotive code scanner and see what it says. Most likely you'll be getting something like a low voltage warning, but when the light comes on like that it's telling you that there's a problem. When the light goes out the computer thinks the problem is solved.
I'd suspect the battery but I'd also connect the code scanner before I replace anything.

Hi!
Turn ignition to ON (everything lit up) BUT do NOT start it.
Press the gas pedal to the floor 3 (three, not 2, the manual is incorrect) times DELIBERATELY, not rapidly, in 5 (five) seconds. Turn the ignition OFF (to lock).

Are you getting any error code ?

    You probably have an intermittent fault in one of the oxygen sensors .

    If your car back pressures then there is a problem with your catalytic converter,and apparently that foul smell... Get your catalytic convertor checked

The 1st thing to do is get a free system test form Autozone or kragen and see what code is stored that goes along with the light, there are over 100 trouble code's that turn the light on

THE LARGE HOSE "CARB TO AIR FILTER may be OFF" so INSTALL IT and check out.the engine light will function properly.

You will need to have the codes pulled and we can go from there autozone will do this for free. if it is running rough may have a cyl misfire and this would also explain the smell. get the code and let me know what it is and i can help you

All modern vehicles have a computer or the ECM (Electronic Control Module) that controls the operation of the vehicle powertrain (the engine and transmission). The main purpose of this is to keep the engine running at top efficiency with the lowest possible emissions. With constantly growing demands for better fuel economy and new strictest emission regulations it's not very easy to achieve. The engine parameters need to be constantly and precisely adjusted according to various conditions such as speed, load, engine temperature, gasoline quality, ambient air temperature, road conditions, etc. That's why today's cars have much more electronics than in early days - there is a large number of various sensors and other electronic devices that help the vehicle computer or ECM to precisely control the engine and transmission operation and monitor emissions.
The vehicle computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and your car needs to be looked at. To properly diagnose what is wrong, you need to take your car to a mechanic or a dealer. The technician at the dealership or a garage will then hook up the scanner to the car computer and retrieve the stored trouble code(s). Then he (she) will look it up in the service manual provided by a car manufacturer. The service manual contains the list of possible codes (about few hundreds) and describes what each code means and what needs to be tested. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, what engine parameter is out of normal range. The technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint a defective part.

Check the ECU engine temperature sensor. If it thinks the engine is hot, it will struggle to run when cold.

Rough idle and smells like gas when driven


When checking for Vacuum leaks, did you use a water spray bottle on seams and vacuum lines and EGR pod?(engine running)

Check for air leaks in exhaust before O2 sensors. O2 thinks its running lean from air leak in exhaust header and enrichens fuel charge.

Fuel injectors dirty, not closing tight. Switch injectors to other bank and see if Error Code moves to relocated injectors.

Bad spark plugs, check if you have fuel runners in your intake.

Engine light came on


Make sure your gas cap is tight, at least 5 clicks, sometimes a gas cap that doesn't seal tight will trigger the Check Engine Light. If the light stays on you will need to pull the Trouble Code from the ECM (Computer) using a OBD II scanner.

I had my check engine light come on & the code is a P1259 /fuel and air metering issue. Does anyone know what part this code is referring to that may need replaced? The car is running okay. However...


I suggest replacing the O2 sensor(s). These detect the level of carbon monoxide in the exhaust, and at a certain level the exhaust is then returned to the engine to be reburned, then sent back through the exhaust, catalytic converter, then the muffler.

Take the code type to an auto parts dealer, and verify what the code is specifically referring to.

If the engine was idling (running) rough, also repalce the air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs<-- find out gap setting; plug wires, distributor cap and rotor (if equipped).

Also, if you haven't recently had the fluids changed, have them changed as well, as the filters for each and the gaskets if needed.

NOTE: if you smell an unusual smell coming from your car; the smell of rotten eggs or such, then your catalytic converter may need replaced.

Rough idling, poor gas milege


Usually the rotten egg smell is a clogged CAT. Is the engine light on and if so did you retrieve any codes?

Rough idle no check engine lights sometimes runs up to 2000rpms other times dies out or idles low smell like its runing rich changed the tps with no change whats the problem?


It sounds like your engine is gummed up. I recommend that you get two bottles of a fuel additive called seafoam and dump them into the gas tank. In no time, your engine will be purring again.

2005 honda accord, rough idle and malfunction light on. Problem with idle will clear but light stays on. Car has 147,000 miles. I went to clean off the engine and the problem started. Car will start...


I would take it to a local Auto Zone, or Advance Auto, they can run it through the diagnostic computer and see what codes are tripping, most likely it's going to be for a cylinder mis-fire, i would try making sure all the plugs are good, and check and see if all the plug wires are secured tightly.
