right idea but stores no longer will check a car that is 23 years old. They don't bother to keep that equipment., It only has about five codes.

You can have the Codes checked for free at Autozone, Oreilys, or Advance autoparts. Then you can either buy the part or you will know what repair you need and can call and price the repair.

Please rate my info.

You did not show the Brand of car this problem is for. There was a way of jumping 2 terminals on the Diagnostic plug and getting the Codes from flashes from the Dash "Check Engine" light. You can probably find the old system Codes online. Although the autoparts stores may toss the OBD2 or earlier scanners away, small Repair shops specializing in older models may be able to scan your unit.

It's an olds delta 88, year 1989--don't know why that didn't show. Thanks, this is a good tip. My friend did this for me, although I can't quite understand how it works. He got a 42 EST code. Seems that is probably a loose or dirty wire, connection, etc. that affects both ignition and fuel injection. the latter explains the rough running--feels like it is 'burping.' I drove all day yesterday, burping along but it kept running.

I would very first recommend checking your transmission fluid. It may be low and would cause the lurches and the rough shifts.

My Cavalier is a 2001 and suffers the same problem, the check engine light and trac off lights stay on. When switching from Park to Drive, the transmission jumps and the car jerks forward. Any suggestions...

I can't tell for sure not knowing what the check engine light is on for. When it comes ,on it means the computer has detected a problem with a sensor, or with the emissions coming out the tail pipe. As you described the car lurches forward when put in gear, I would highly suspect the IAT (Intake air temperature) sensor. It is located in the air snorkle, coming from the air filter box to the throttle body. It has only 2 wires going to it, and It is generally caused by bad connections at the sensor, or a broken wire going to the sensor (quite often in the connector body itself). It would be best for you to have the check engine light code scanned. You can usually have this done at a large auto parts retailer for free. They range from P0110 - P0114. If so it is very unlikely to be a faulty IAT sensor, usually wiring related.

HELP!!! - 99 Jeep Cherokee Classic is stalling!

I had same problem, it was bad battery. Also may want to check the ground, I also had that problem. Which can cause these types of events. Though you may have a mechanical problem. So next time check engine light is coming on. Take it to local autozone. They can check the codes for you for free. Then that will give you/us much better information to go on. Thank you, Lee

How do I know if my 98 cavalier needs new motor mounts and how $$

The motor mounts that go bad is mostly the top ones. You can get pick those up at Parts Source or Auto Zone and they can give instructions on how too's if you'ld like to try to change it your self. It should not take more then an hour and the shop rates vary from $65.00 to $85.00 per hour where you go. Best thing is to go to Auto Zone and price out the mount.
Oneway to make sure it's you mount's is to apply the brakes as hard as you can and put it in to drive or revers and see if you can fell a jump and then try it again with less perssure on the brakes too see if there is a difference no how the car lurches forward or back wards.
If you feel like there is a lurch with out the car moving then that's the engine jumpping and most likly your going to have to change the mount's. Good luck and hope this helps.
