Question about 1995 Ford F250

1995 diesel f-250 will not start

I believe the starter is not functioning as when you turn the key it only clicks (not continuously). I am looking for a picture of the starter on the engine so I know where to look for it. Hopefully, I will then be able to replace it myself.

It sound like my starter might have the same problem. It was all fine until I drained the batteries trying to start on a cold morning. I've tried to recharge the batteries, give it a boost from a battery on a running tractor, but it would not turn. Just keeps on clicking... I have cleaned batteries\cables contacts and removed both batteries from the truck and charged them both overnight. They both showing 12.9V now, so that should be fully charged? I will try to put them back and try to start again, but I know there is a little chance it will start now...

Should be able to... you may be able to see the starter from the top. look where the motor and transmission join. you will see the starter then. usually two or three wires connect to it.

a quick test woud be to hit the starter with a hammer (not too hard) while someone turns the key for you. be careful as it may start. make sure you are not near any mechanical moving parts that can injure you.

If the hammer test causes it to start... replace the starter... this test works best when the starter first starts to fail... after awhile tapping it won't work.

1990 Cat 426B turbo backhoe Turn key to start runs until I let go of key. And suck life out of battery after like 5 revolutions Replaced:starter, cables, battery, ignition key switch,& relays?

Hi Rick:
This should be a diesel engine so if it starts when the key is turned to the start but stops when the key is released, the fuel is being shut off since a diesel will continue to run as long as it is getting fuel.
Something is wrong with the fuel shutoff solenoid or the switch connection that is providing power to it.
I'd be trouble shooting the intended wiring function with a voltmeter or continuity meter.
Cheers

I have a 1995 ford f350 turbo diesel snow truck, and when i turn the key dosent start and makes like a clik clik under the hood

Okay, If this noise happens when you turn the Key to start, your Starter Relay is bad. Now the other possibility is the Glowplug Timer. When you start a Diesel there is a pause in the initial cold start. You turn the Igniition Key to Run, then let the Glowplug Timer cycle. This cycle sound will be a series of clicks which also may cause the lights to dim.

The glowplugs absolutely must warm up to start a cold diesel engine. There should be a light on the dash which either goes off when the glowplugs are ready or a light will turn on when they are ready. It is only after that activity that you will turn the Key to Start.

Since Diesels take more power to Start, there are 2 batteries. As with a single battery system, every connection must be clean. If the Glow-plug Timer is working and you only get clicks by turning your Key to Start, check the things I said earlier. Your Starter Relay and the big cable connections.

If after all of that, the engine will not turn over and only clicks, jump the Starter Relay with 1 cable from a jumper cable set from the Positive Battery cable post to the Starter Relay on the Starter wire connector. Make sure the truck is in Park or Neutral. If the Starter jumper cable sparks and the Starter does not turn, the Starter is bad. If the Starter spins it confirms the Relay is bad.

I hope my Solution gets you going and that you consider this helpful.

Starting problem in a '97 dodge ram diesel

Could be the solenoid on the starter. Next time it doesn't start, hit the starter with a hammer or other hard object, then try to start it. If it starts, replace the starter before it leaves you stranded

95 olds achieva starter not engaging

The click you hear is the starter relay. Check for continuity thru relay with battery negative cable disconnected and switch in start position. If no continuity, it probably has burned contacts. Sometimes these can be taken apart and contacts filed/sanded cleaned.

Sounds like a starter problem. If a 'click' sound is heard when it won't turn over,it is probably the starter.
