hook the car up to a scan tool and see what kinds of codes that the computer is sending out. You can take it to autozone and get your car scanned for free. They will let you know of any codes that are in the system.

Trying to find out where the crankshaft sensor is located on Mazda Tribute 2002? Need to change it

2004 Mazda tribute 2.0l manual transmission cranks position sensor tip worn / rubbing. p0351, p0352, p0500, p0320 codes. I have a 2004 Mazda tribute with 2.0l 4 cylinder. 140,000 miles. First problem was it would not start but I could hear the fuel pump run and the engine cranked over. I checked for spark and all four plugs had no spark. p0351, p0352, p0500, and p0320 codes displayed.
I have 12 volts at coil. I decided to remove and inspect crank sensor on the transmission side of the engine ( on engine below thermostat housing bolted to engine block) once i removed it i noticed the tip of the sensor was broken, yes, broken. so I knew i found the problem.
I put a new crank sensor in and the car started but ran for 1 hour idling as if a cylinder was not firing. Then it would not start ever again. I removed my brand new replacement sensor to find the tip was rubbed off enough to see the inside metal. i think it could be a possible warped flywheel but I am having trouble finding diagrams of the excitation part of how the crank position sensor works.
I believe the flywheel has holes that excite the sensor. The tribute does move and clutch works for the hour I had it running, so the manual Trans does work as well as the clutch.

Why does my check engine light keep coming on for the same codes?

Cylinder #2 is misfiring (P0302) and the Trib is Misfiring at startup (P0316). Mazda Tributes and Ford Escapes are notorious for cylinders going bad. You can either change each cylinder as it decreases in performance, or suck it up and do them all at once.

2004 mazda tribute error code p 0 136

Code 136 is for a problem with the O2 sensor bank one sensor two.
That is the sensor after the catalytic converter.
The sensor or the wiring would need to be checked.

Hi! You should go to your mechanic and clear the faults and take the car to roadtest and scan again if the faults still remain..but some it should go in incorrect ratio when your ouput speed sensor does not reading u have to make sure to check the output speed sensor for lost connection

Cam sensor. I have had the same problem, we have replaced air intake, crank shaft sensor, fuel injectors, coils, spark plugs, converters, and the cam sensor has seemed to help so far

With a po422 code on a 2001 elantra do i replace the cat. conv. closest to the engine or the one closer to the muffler.

you have a 2001, catalict converters are guaranteed for 20-30 years. Your code respresents a problem with your Co2 sensor, probably needs to be replaced or cleaned out real good

Car is hard to start. Keeps shutting off when idling and when I decelerate. Could this just be the fuel filter I hope?

I am not a mechanic but I own a 2002 Mazda Tribute and have replaced the idle control valve 2x. pretty soon it will not stay started unless you have your foot on the gas....sounds like you are there. It costs between $200-$400. They told me at the dealer that Tributes have this problem and it happens a lot. I have had it happen two times in 60,000 miles I put on it (it's now at 86,000). Other than that GREAT vehicle!
