Question about Cars & Trucks
I have a 2001 fiat punto ELX and today white smoke started coming from under bonnet after being stuck in traffic for 40 minutes. Had a weird smell too - can't place it, it wasn't rubber or oil, maybe a little bit sweet? Temperature gauge was fine - bit higher than normal was at half way point and no engine warning light came on. No visible sign of what it could be. The smoke was coming from under the black plastic thing in the middle of the engine (a passer by said it was the fan). After an hour started driving again, smoke did initially start again but by time got home it had gone, temp did not go past the quarter mark.
Could be a number of things from your fan not working, temperature control switch not working,no coolant in engine.your head gasket gone, water pump broke its a common problem with puntos.

sounds like a blown head gasket letting coolant get injected into the engine and getting burned with the fuel. a head gasket replacement should help
