First Check your serpentine belt or what ever turns your pump. Turn the belt over and check for cracks or how much it's worn. If it slips this will cause whining or skipping with the pump. Clean power steering fluid is best. Pump could be on its way out. Check the level

SOURCE: Steering wheel vibration and whine noise from rear of car

Yes, and it probably is your wheel bearing. Hearing a sound like a chain dragging is classic. You may also hear a clicking noise or chain dragging noise when turning to the left or right.

Look under the car and see if the rubber boots that surround the axle near the tires are cracked and leaking grease. If so, it is almost a certainty that the bearings are bad as you have lost grease and thus lubrication to the bearings.

Good luck,
bob

Whining noise when step on gas

Sounds like the power steering pump. check the fluid level. Have someone listen under the hood while you are turning the steering wheel. If the whine gets louder, your pump could be the issue.

Engine whine, follows engine rpms, louder when I turn.

generally means a power steering pump issue. Go to a car parts store website and find one for your car, then find the thing under the hood, mounted to the engine and being spun by the belt, which looks just like it. often there is a cap with a dipstick and you can check the steering fluid level. if the level is way down you may have a leaking hose or other component.

about 2000 there was a shift away from the old style fluid pumps to electronic systems so do not be stunned if there is no such thing as a power steering pump for your car. but if the noise gets louder by moving the steering wheel, you still need to look at whatever is boosting the steering wheel motion to steer the car.

Making noise when turning steering wheel but no leakage

The power steering pump that is used in your car is notorious for noise issues, it is a loud whine which gets louder as you turn the steering wheel right or left, flush the system fluid and replace the pump.

My 1999 dodge Intrepid makes a loud whining noise (like a power steering pump) any time it is running... Any ideas on what it could be?

if the winning noise gets louder when you turn the steering wheel, it is the power steering pump.
99 to 04 intrepids have a serpintine belt with a self tightner.what i did with mine is **** the old power steering fluid out with a shop vac.replaced half with new fluid and top up with a transmission/power steering fluid additive.the noise went away after a couple of days.

Whining sound from front passenger side.

Check the condition of front disc brake pads, if they are in need of replacement a preset little metal arm starts rubbing the discs and will make a whining noise. It doesn't do any damage but it's irritating to listen to.
