Question about 2008 Mercury Mariner
My mariner has shifted a tad bit hard since i changed the transmission fluid a few months ago. the other day it went from not to bad to wont shift into second without letting off the gas petal. when i do that it shifts smoothly and the rest of the gears work automatically and smoothly. i did notice it had very little fluid so i topped it off but the problem still persists.
You just changed the fluid as few months ago
Why would it be low?
Low fluid level may have caused it to slip & ruin
the clutch discs
You may have bad trans solenoids or other shift
strategy sensors that need to be diagnosed
If you had the wrong fluid put in your have possible
Need a shop to spend some time with it,explain all
that has been done, why, how, etc & make sure you
drive on a road test & take a mechanic along

It was a temporary fault that put the car into limp mode (a safeguard operating condition designed to protect the transmission in case of serious failure). Sometimes a transient fault can occur, and the car goes into limp mode just to be sure it's not for real. Shutting off and restarting the car is the usual way to clear the fault and return the car to normal operation - if the problem was real, the car would've stayed in limp mode after restart, or gone into limp once you started driving again. I wouldn't sweat this one, since it went right back to normal operation.

when was last transmission service done? and that means changing the transmission fluid, and the filter and also have someone check the transmission linkage adjustment and this normally shows up when it is hard to change gears and also check the transmission fluid level

SOURCE: Transmission hesitates shifting into second and perhaps third gear when driving slow. When acceleration is positive transmission shifts smoothly. Reference "99 Mercury Transmission" as Subject when
Several things could be causing your problem:
p.s. If you have the fluid changed, make sure it's done from the tranmission pan, not through the filler tube; siphoning through the filler tube can be hazardous to the transmission, especially cars with a lot of miles

It is in the bottom pan. In order to replace it you have to replace all the solenoids. They are all built into a solenoid pack. What does it do when it shifts to 2nd? Not at all or slips?

do a filter and fluid change and add LUBE GUARD trans additive if this doesnt work, have trans repaired///sounds like valve body is stuck and this additive will fix it if thats the problem
